First, thanks for the replies to my previous thread re 12.6. Someone at Firearms Registry suggested having the barrel of the Luger in question changed from a 4 in. to 6 in.. This would take it out of prohibited territory and into restricted. Apparently we do have a few friends on the inside. Now, where do we find a 6 or 8 in. barrel for a Luger and how hard is the swap? It's important that we get the short barrel removed right away and have a longer barrel in our possesion or everything in the hands of a gunsmith. I realize head spacing is critical but that can be worked on later, right now we have to change the configuration to prove the gun is no longer prohibited. I don't know how long they'll allow to have the conversion completed.

From what I understand, you are not allowed to take possesion of the gun at all until the work has been done. Usually when you purchase the gun you will have it shipped directly to the gunsmith doing the work. The gunsmith will look after the disposition of the old barrel (you can't posses it). He will have it re registered as restricted and then ship it to you. There are a number of members who have had this done and am sure they will correct me if I am wrong. Also you only have to put on a barrel the legal minimum plus a bit (or whatever you want) this maintains the classic look that so many people like.

Changing a barrel on a Luger can be more difficult than changing one on a bolt action rifle. The procedure is similar.
The proper tools are really important.

It's an absolute bugger to change the barrel on a Luger. Unless you are a gunsmith and know what you're doing I would get a gunsmith to do it. Have to anyway if you don't have 12(6) for it.

Barry Jensen at Bits of Pieces in Delta, BC does this sort of thing quite often. He's done a few pistols (no Lugers) for me. If you look at his Bits of Pieces website, I believe he lists Luger barrrels he can change and the cost. It's worth a call to him to talk about it. He does very good work and takes care of the re-registration.

Josef Dlask's Luger barrels ($220!) are beautiful. Barry Jensen is a Prince. Epps are great to deal with. I don't think you can go wrong with the suggestions so far.
