I recently added an all matching 1914 dated Luger pistol to my collection and was wondering if anybody could identify this unit marking stamped into the front of the grip.

And because I'm sure people would like to see the whole pistol:

Sorry for the poor picture quality. Not totally sure what I'm going to do with it yet but it makes it interesting conversation piece.

So cool! Congratulations! I owned one similarly marked once, if I recall correctly it is a Schutzpolizei gun. Go to Jan stills site to be sure, great Luger guys there.
Once again nice pistol thanks for showing us.

Looks like Police Po8 with missing safety on sideplate. D.V should be code for town or village and number is inventory #.

S - SSchupo command at either Essen or Düsseldorf
D - could be Düsseldorf
V - is roman #5 designating rural district

Wow thanks for the info! Not being very Luger fluent it took me a bit of googling to find a picture of the side plate safety. So I guess the search is on for athe replacement part and to figure out how to install it.

Mine is a 1916 and I looked for reference to the mentioned side plate safety and couldn't find anything so it looks like it was only the police version that has this safety. What was the purpose of this safety that apparently wasn't installed in the military version?

I did see the video that shows how you can field strip the pistol with a live round still in the chakmber and create a very dangerous situation. Not a good idea.....

Hello all. I’m bringing this old post back as I’m thinking about selling/trading it shortly and I’m looking for some advice on value.
One thing that has come to light since my last post is that this example turns out to be a rare variation. This is one of approximately 1400 Made and accepted without a stock lug.
See link for a good discussion on these interesting Lugers on the Luger Forums:
https://www.lugerforums.com/threads/1914-dwm-8083a-no-stock-lug.722/
To help with a value here is the good and bad:
The good:
With the exception of the barrel the rest is matching. The finish on the barrel matches the rest of the pistol and the article notes these pistols were made with available commercial parts so I guess it could be original but it’s not matching. The bore is very good at the very least.
Rare, one of 1400, made without a stock lug that falls within the prescribed serial number range.
Has correct acceptance marks.
The bad:
Though matching the magazine appears to be a WW2 Schmeisser Made replacement.
Miss matched barrel
Missing “sear safety” spring unique to police Lugers.
It’s a Luger so prohib.
So Luger folk what say you regarding value?
The mismatched barrel may not be to big a deal for those contemplating a barrel swap to nonrestricted.
