Hi,

I am interesting in owning a Luger but not interested in the collectors value. The mechanism is fascinating and I just want one to shoot and not keep it as a safe queen. In fact I would be fine with a replica. Any suggestions what model/make or source to get one. I do not have prohibitive status.

Buy one that has been converted to restricted status. Stay away from 30 luger caliber, it's prohibitively expensive and not much choice in components either. Even for just a shooter, be prepared to pay through the nose.

You should be able to find some rebarrelled and refinished examples with limited collector and market value. less that 1k I would think. If you just like the mechanism and want something as cheap as possible, erma and stoeger(?) made a 22 version which are fairly cheap these days (500+/-), in part because most were not terribly reliable.

Luger replicas do not exist. George Luger's superior re-design of the Borchardt pistol were made on one of the 4 manufacturing lines as original production. Some stainless steel ones were made from investment castings in the 1970's or 1980's, but...

Second class Liberal citizens can purchase original Luger production guns with the longer factory barrels, like the 1917 Artillery Luger currently on the EE. But all others are unavailable to own, touch, acquire or aspire to, due to the freakin Liberal gov't's UNCONSTITUTIONAL gun ownership rules.

Perhaps you can buy an overpriced rebarreled Luger that now has no provenance. Look for them on the EE....

In my experience rebarreled Lugers sell in the low to mid teens depending on condition. As to them being "overpriced" I would have to disagree. If they were overpriced the ones on lugercollecter dot com wouldn't sell so quickly.

Yes exactly. I got one having being cheated out of my 12(x) before the days of the internets.

I was completely satisfied with the one I got from lugercollector. Highly recommend! :)

See if you can locate an AIMCO/Stoeger P.08 or Navy replica on the electronic exchanges. The AIMCO American Eagle stainless steel Luger reproduction was last produced in the early 1990s. I have the blued Navy Model with its 5"-long barrel. It shoots perfectly, using 115-grain Aguila 9mm FMJ and is highly accurate. No need to worry about messing up a wartime relic: just shoot until you're out of ammo!

I bought mine from a CGN (hello Sarge).
Originally from "Luger collector".
It is a shooter; I shoot it ; I'm happy with it.....the way it must be.

Our barrel length laws are beyond stupid but I will put on a flame suit and say the slightly longer barrel on a luger looks better balanced...... :)

I got mine from the Luger Collector as well, and yes it does hurt to have it rebarrelled so I can own it. I wanted one and that's the only way I could have it, crazy system but it is what it is. Great to shoot, highly recommend.

Unfortunately while there is a work around for the luger barrel, its not so easy to find a solution for the many other interesting smaller pistols and revolvers.......

Yes, especially all the interesting older European stuff in 7.65. ......From a collectible POV way too much neat stuff is off limits due to that stupid caliber ban.

Only if you are referring to 9mm pistols. We have a fair number of Swiss lugers in 7.65 para, and lots of ammo too. As others have pointed out, the ammo is more expensive as are the lugers themselves, but they are all original and work. Quite a few 9mm lugers get damaged when rebarrelled and don't work reliably.

First I've ever heard of that. The rebarreled 9mm guns from lugercollector all seem fine. I know my 1917 DWM works well.

A cynic might view that statement as somewhat self serving coming from a company with a lot of high priced Swiss lugers to move. ;)

We have 3 or 4 in the shop right now. Frames get twisted if not supported properly. A cynic might also think that those with similarly fashioned P08s were trying to increase their value. In any event, a quick google search will prove my point.

Exactly.

Intrestingly the vz61 being classified as a 'restricted rifle' is in 7.65 although limited to 5 round magazines therefore. Yet another illustration of how dumb the ban is.

But the Luger is definitely the poster child for demonstrating the idiocy involved.

Shooting Center guy: DWM made the Swiss Lugers starting in 1900-1901 in .30Luger.

Hugo Borchardt's re-mastered pistol by Georg Luger was manufactured by 4 actual Luger production lines:
DWM, Erfurt, Krieghoff & Simson. DWM, who incidentally made the Lugers for the British contract in 1928, and curiously, DWM between 1906 & 1914, made 9mm Lugers for the Russian military in 9mm, eventually becomes Berlin-Karlsruher Industrial-Werke (BKIW) the holding company of Mauser-Werke.

hatman: Yes DWM made Swiss lugers starting in 1900. They also made them into about 1920. However WF in Bern was set up to produce lugers too starting in 1918
