Lyman 55 powder measure problem

Recently purchased new lyman 55 powder measure. New to reloading. Have been loading 9 mm requiring 3.8 gn titgroup . Every load varies from .9 to .5.0. Read manual dozens of time. About every 1 in 10 loads is 3.8 to 4.1??? Should I just return it but what to replace it with. Using Lyman turret press.

My Lyman 55 is more consistent if my slides are adjusted shallow instead of having a narrow deep opening. I had a problem with small charges until I figured out to only use the two smallest slides. My 55 from the 1950's is as accurate as my two year old 55 that is the black powder model. BP and smokeless are used in the new one.
 
Agreed....I have a vintage 55 as well and once dialed in, work's well and very consistent.
Having said that, it took me a while to figure out the nuances to make it work.
OP....the Lyman 55 measure is one of the best, don't give up on it.
 
If it's brand new brand new, did you clean it thoroughly? The packing oils will pick up powder and stick it to the walls, leaving you with an inconsistent drop.
 
I've been using mine for 40 yrs. Everything from 2.0 grs Bullseye to 50.0 grs 4064. Only inconsistency in charge weight is with long grain stick powders like 4064 . Once in awhile (maybe 1 in 10) it will cut a kernel and charge will come out a little light. I weigh all my rifle loads so not a big deal. Handles powders like 700x and Unique well. i understand they can be a challenge with some measures. I love my 55.
 
Problem after taking it apart to clean was that the upper slide was engaging the lower slide when it was adjusted. Now working perfectly. Thanks for the help. Without the suggestion to take it apart and clean I would not have tried to disasemble

I have an early '70's vintage 55 that's been modified by Culver, before he made his own and I do 2 taps with the knocker for consistent charges.

I've used RCBS to but only OK. The worst I have used was the Hornady, and sold that tout suite.
