hey all. i just mounted a peep site on my 336 30/30, and i'm kinda lost from here. do i need to take the rear elevated site off and just run with the front site? or do i need to use the rear site as well as the front, any hints, tips or tricks for shooting this thing in? also i'll be shooting leverevolution this season. if theres any calgary shooters who take pity on me, i'd sure like some face to face mentoring to get this gun shooting strait. thanks

You do not use the factory rear sight now, just line up your apreture with the front sight. If the rear sight with the elevator down to the lowest position interferes with your sight picture, just take the rear off completely. There are 3/8" dovetail blanks to fill the hole if required.
You should not even be thinking of centering the front bead in the apreture, just put the front sight on the target and your eye will automatically center the apreture for you. This is a very fast and effectiove sighting system. And the Lyman 66 is a good durable sight too, unlike anything will ever go wrong with it. Practice with this system and you have a great setup there.
Good luck and good choice.

You may have to replace the front sight with a higher one. If this is the case with your rifle consider a square post rather than a bead. The square post is more robust, faster to acquire, and gives a better index for elevation than the bead. If you get the post made out of brass (Dave Jennings makes these) you will have a sight that appears white on a dark target, and black on a white target.

There are many peep sights out there, some could attach to a weaver rail or to the tang of your Savage - if one with the proper screw spacing could be found.
