The Lyman Alaskan did not use a Griffin & Howe mount. While similar, it is quite different.

The No18 storage tins were converted from standard No8 tins.

I have never heard of a reproduction of the scope case. It might not be impossible to find an original, but it isn't going to be easy. Some of the 74L rifles were scrapped by the Dutch a number of years ago, it always possible that scope cases could have been released. Some of the scopes were.

Lyman Alaskan's were the scopes used on 1903A4's, not No. 4's, as I recall. You see Lyman Alaskan's on U.S. auction sites occasionally.

In Canadian service the Alaskan was known as the 32TP - Trade Pattern - 'scope. Limited use. The Weaver 330 was also installed on LB Ts in limited numbers.

Actually, the Weaver 330 was only used as a test scope in 1 or 2 guns, which utilized standard No32 rings with bushings to take up the extra 1/4".

The tests resulted in the 330 being judged as fit only for .22 use ("unfit for service use", was I believe the phrase used)...

I believe that after failing the testing program any 330s would have been replaced with standard No32 scopes & issued/returned for future test programs.

Lyman Alaskan

The Alaskan was the preferred scope for the US M1903A4 sniper rifle.Unfortunately Lyman could not provide the scope in the numbers and times required,so the 03A4 was fielded with a Weaver 330 variant instead. The Alaskan is a far superior scope and some were fitted to the 03A4s later on.At the same time Lyman was working up the M81/M82 variant of the Alaskan for the M1C Garand sniper rifle, as well as furnishing a small number of Alaskans to Canada for the No4 sniper rifles.Must have been a hectic time.I have a Weaver M73B1 (330 in military use)for my 03A4,but prefer to use the Alaskan instead. It is still a dandy scope with clear optics and holds it's zero just fine.
