I have a Lyman Alaskan 2 1/2 X scope with fine cross hairs & a target dot that I took off an 03 A4 clone I purchased here in Canada & have since used an M84 scope in its place. Talking to a dealer yesterday & he mentioned that it may be off an Enfield sniper rifle. Beside the word Alaskan on the side of the body is the number: 6721 & on the turret another number 7634***. Is there any truth to this & if so, do these given numbers put it on an Enfield? And which one? Thanks for any help...

You're being mislead. The recticle for an Enfield Long Branch sniper is a post and horizontal hair. The turret number is 44xxS to 46xxs; only 99 mounted for service...assuming from serial number range twice as many made; all marked US Patent No 2078858. You've got an old sporter scope. Many of these went to Holland after WW11 and evently sold off as surplus...occasionally see a scope and bracket surface. If you like send a pix or 2 to rgg_7@hotmail.com and I'll take a good look at it for you. Ron

I may be able to post a pick in a couple of days. Wifey's gone out of town with the camera. I figured as much. In all fairness to the dealer, he didn't see it either & wasn't 100% sure. Not being that knowledgeable about Enfields, I figured I get a fast answer here. Thanks...

It was a secondary standard for the '03A4. One of 'em sold last year on one of the U.S. auctions sites(Cowan's) for $1200US. Four times what they figured it was worth.
An M84 belongs on an M1D or C.

No worries the M84 I speak of is from Numrich. From what little I know, it is my understanding the M84 for the A4 was the preferred scope during the Korean War.
A debatable statement for sure, but it is definitely a better scope than my commercial Lyman for that clone. If a military Weaver 330 or Alaskan scope (can't remember mil spec no.'s) falls into my hands I'll probably replace the M84 out. It's a fake A4, but it's my A4 & when finished will be correct, short of the serial number. I wasn't fortunate to be old enough when these rifles were selling for much less than they are now, so a copy will have to do...

"...to be old enough when these rifles were selling for..." Mine, a real '03A4, cost me $175Cdn with no scope in the early 80's. Friggin' things shoot too. Put a 2.5 to 8 Scopechief on it(issue scopes were expensive even then. About $200US, as I recall. Didn't have the money.), worked up a load with 168 grain Hornady match bullets and IMR4064. One hole groups if I'm having a good day.

This is what a true and original Lyman Alaskan from an Enfield TP sniper looks like:

Thanks for posting the pics Mario. Hey Sunray, not to give your age away, but I was ten at the start of the eighties...:)pjust a friendly smartazz jab:D). But a beautiful fine for the time. By the late 80's, early 90's for sure; these rifles really started to rocket up in price. I remember fair to good condition general issue 03's going for at least $400 at the Michigan shows and only a little less over here...

The Alaskan is a fine old scope.I use one on an M1C Garand another on an 03A4 Springfield and they both work well.I have a correct Weaver M73B1/330 for my 03A4,but I much prefer the Alaskan for shooting. The Weaver seems like a .22 scope in comparison.Nice pics of the authentic Alaskan for a Long Branch TP sniper.

The number on your turret is almost certainly the US Federal drawing number. Are you sure the number isn't off your turret caps?

Sounds like an M.81 to me. I've seen some that only had numbers on the scope caps.

Ok I pulled it off the shelf again to have a look. Now to confuse things even more. 1st off I was wrong about the caps there is a number on one of them as well. Another 7 digit number but different than the one on the base of the turret; it is: 7575180. The caps appear to be 2 different types though, so I suppose one is a replacement? 2nd problem is that on the other side of the base it does indeed say "ALL WEATHER". I will post picks in a couple of days, as I'm off tomorrow to pick up another Springfield I came across. Cheap, but sight unseen... I will try to post A.S.A.P.
