Was going through one of the safes looking for a specific gun and came across this Lyman Great Plains kit that I had cobbled together for my son years ago (Aug 2005 to be exact. One of the few that I dated). This kit was, IMO the best low end kit on the market as far as architecture goes but still needed some “tweaks”. Those tweets came in the form of removing much of the fish belly from the bottom of the buttstock, reshaping the wrist and reshaping the forearm and cheek piece. Of course I also personalized it some with the inlays and the bi-metal patch box. The one and only time that I made a bi- metal inlay, in this case iron and GS. Anyways, I don’t know if these kits are still available but if somewhat authentic is the goal and budget is tight, these are/were a great option. Nice work!
I did the Lyman GP and Plains Pistol both in .54 years ago.
I was originally looking for a TC Hawken kit but much prefer the Lyman having a closer resemblance to the original Hawken.
Again, great job on your kit!!

Thanks for the kind words. I used the eagle on the cheek and the double eagle on the patch box because they were purchased inlays that I had laying around and I was no longer using any precut inlays anymore on my long rifles. When Billy and I bought the kit(at wholesale sports in Calgary) I told Billy to let me do the talking. I had the guy bring out several kits (all flint .54’s) as I looked them all over for the best wood. I was not looking for figure as much as grain structure and I letting as some of these kits have some sloppy inletting. The sales guy asked if we had shot muzzleloader before and I told him no. Was quite entertaining listening to him “expertly” explain all there was to know about muzzleloader in general and flintlocks in particular. While I lied when I said I had no experience with ML’rs, he mislead us to suggest that did, when he clearly did not.

I strongly considered getting the lastest iteration of the Lyman Great Plains rifle (The "Signature Series" built by Pedersoli), but it is was pushing 1000cad finished and for a few hundred dollars more i could build a Patonica Early Hawken kit with some superior components. The Great Plains rifle was quickly discontinued after that.

There was a bad run of the GPR towards the end before Pedersoli took over. Luckily I wasn’t a victim. I picked mine up in 2009 from Hillfolk in Sk. A whopping $550 for the kit then. We had quality back then which definitely stands out for License To Kills end results with his kit build.
TOTW has several flint kits I’ve eyed for far too long.

Gun counter humour always brings a chuckle or two
