I am on the verge of ordering one of these from the states in a flintlock.Does anyone have anything good or bad to say.It would be a .50cal with a 1:60 twist for shooting ball.I am a first timer as well.

Sweet choice, don't be influenced by my opinion, but for RB its nice to have a heavy ball with more dia. for hunting, and so .54 cal would get my vote. I have had .45 , 50 , and .54 cal rifles, flint and cap lock. Either way your gonna have fun with it. My most accurate rifles were .54 cal

The Lyman are good rifles, and I would also go with the .54. A hunting buddy had the .54 Great Plains, and I have a .50 Deerstalker. We took more than a few whitetails, and the .50 got the job done, but the .54 was just plain better with the round balls.

Lyman Great Gun

I had a Lyman Great Plains and It was my first Modern Black Powder Rifle. It was a 50 cal and I liked it, but I bought a Pedersoli Tryon to replace it. The Pedersoli is heavier, and when I get back to shooting I will probably try to find another 50 Lyman.

Once again the people on this site are rarin' to help out.I have been p.m'ed by yet another member and pointed in the direction of one that is available,in a .54 as well.Thanks.

Another vote for the .54 and round balls.
The lyman is a good rifle.
You may want to upgrade the lock in a few years and a Siler is an excellent drop in choice.

Turns the rifle into another one completll, as the lock is the very heart of the action, and a very good one stands out from a cheper, less expensive one.

So the replacement lock is better, and what of the cost, ballpark

I'm not too sure, but I think they can still be had from TOTW for about $100 U.S.

Well worth it , if a person wanted to upgrade.
I have seen many that had Gren Mountain barrels and ASilers on them, and they never shot as well with the original barrels or locks.
The Lymans I have seen have had some very nice wood, and a person could keep the rifle but get a larger caliber barrel (.58?) and such, without getting another complete rifle, thus saving a bunch of money.

I have one in a 54cal flintlock. I don,t know if i got lucky, but my lock is comparable in quickness and reliability to my L&R and Siler locks. If you do buy one you may want to play with it for awile before spending money on new locks. Overall they are one of the better production guns on the market.
