Ok here's one,
Say money is no object you shoot roundball only and paperpunch/plink except for an odd hunt..

Lyman GPR or Pedersoli Rocky mountain Hawken? Both in .54

(Have a T/C Hawken right now)
Opinions of both would be apprieciated.. New toy etc. :)

Want to know reliability of the lock, barrel quality etc.

Cheers!

I shoot both a Pedersoli and a Lyman flinter. In my guns the Pedersoli (Frontier) has a slightly faster lock than the Lyman but I like the looks of the Lyman Great Plains better.

I also like the sights on the Lyman better and you can upgrade to receiver sights and a target front sight if you want to get fancy.

Both guns would make good range guns but are a bit too heavy for me to carry around in the field.

You are comparing one good Italian manufacturer with another good Italian manufacturer. So for the purposes you described:

Survey says: Lyman Great Plains

My money went on a new flint.54 cal Lyman Dearstalker a couple months ago and I have no complaints. The fit of the wood to metal and metal to metal is good and as two of my friends have bought the same rifles, the fit is great on theirs as well, likely suggesting consistant quality control.I am a fan of the fold down sights and find it easy to shoot.I know my lock-time was improved after I took the time to put a mirror finish on the pan giving me a better burn with less fire-works and my groups shrunk, or that's my story and I'm sticking to it.One thing we've found is that if you don't squirt some WD-40 or the like on your flash-hole fitting AT the Range before you go home,it's likely to be glued solid in the barrel later, requiring a drill,e-z out and new fitting to remedy.I'm happy with mine and have NO FEAR of the barrel flying apart because the barrels are made in Italy.

I took the general advice and bought an unfired caplock Lyman GPR .50 from the exchange forum, $350 cash.
Still had the brown packing gunge in the barrel, so its all ready now and I look forward to giving her a plink this weekend..

Thats a really long rifle! Feels great in the aim apart from the crescent buttplate which I'm told is planted in the upper arm instead of the shoulder.
If it shoots well I'll be putting the T/C Hawken up for grabs.

Rifles are like Rabbits, they keep multiplying... ;)

Congratulations! I've got a Lyman GPH in flint and love it with a depraved unholy passion :).
