I've just been given a Lyman Trade Rifle kit by a relative, and was wondering what it's worth. It's a .50cal, percussion cap, and it was purchased in 1982 and never assembled. It has a nicely figured stock, and all the pieces look well-cast and are in new condition.

I've thought about building it and keeping it, but it likely wouldn't get used as much as it should, and I could use a new hunting rifle...

Thanks,

Mike

Kits were popular in the 70's and 80's at least down south. Lyman was a good quality kit rifle and I believe it still is. They are still made today, $429.95. I had a few friends that built them and they had the capablity to shoot better than one usualy could. I still have a lyman .54 mountain pistol which is very accurate that I built from a kit back then. I built a few rifles back then by ordering the parts from different muzzeleloader suppliers and assembling a custom ml rifle. If you are handy with your mitts I would suggest that you go ahead and build the kit. You will get a real satisfaction that you built something nice looking. Good luck. Post pics of the completed rifle.

I just got a Lyman Trade rifle ready to use from Wholesale Sports for $349. The kits sold for $40 or $50 less than the finished rifles, but I don't think the Trade rifle is avalable in kit form anymore.
