Has anybody had to deal with Lyme Disease?

I have a friend who just got diagnosed with it and they were hoping for a referral to a doctor who would have experince with it somewhere in the GTA or Halton.

Their doctor didn't make them feel comfortable about who they would find for them to be sent to. Plus they also told them there would be a longer wait time for the referral which blows my mind being that the longer this goes untreated the worse it is for the patient.

Im sure there are a few hunters that may have had to deal with this so figured this was a natural place to ask.

I had it, picked it up May 2015 and I wasn't diagnosed until August, I thought I was losing my mind.
But once diagnosed it was a simple treatment of antibiotics for a month.
His Doc should be able to prescribe the meds.

Who did the diagnosis? If it was our medical system that did and got a positive test anti-biotics would be standard. My partner has it, she found out when she was back home in Sweden and got tested. Likely had it for about 10 years and despite lot's of visits to Canadian doctors with all sorts of issues they couldn't figure it out. When she got the actual positive test in Sweden it was a few days before she was to fly home so arriving in BC she went to the local clinic and told them of the positive test and was requesting treatment. They told her that there is no such thing as Lyme in B.C.
They were very reluctant to do anything but they did a blood test and it came back negative, we then got in touch with another doctor and learned that the test they did was not broad and did not cover known European strains of Borrelia, this despite her having told them she was bit in Sweden 10 years earlier and had just gotten a positive result on a test done in Sweden! They did another test which came back positive and then our local clinic was freaking out like someone had just captured a Sasquatch!
Bottom line is Canadian doctors in general don't believe in Lyme Disease...... your friend will have to do what you are doing and go online searching for information.

Many people get a brain fog when they are infected and nerve issues and being told it's "all in your head" over and over by the doctors can be tough when you are in a weakened mental state.

When they did finally give her anti biotics it was only a 2 week dose but she insisted on a month given the length of time she had been infected. Even that was not enough to kill the Borrelia. She ended up following her own protocol after a lot of online research using taking Teasel Root (supposed to get the Borrelia out of hiding) and then used Grapefruit seed extract as an anti-biotic. Seems to have helped her get her mental clarity back and the other big thing that helps is to stay health in general with diet and avoid or learn to deal with stress in a healthy way. Yoga, meditation, what ever it takes. Like many things it's a personal journey for each person but thankfully there is a lot of support and information on line.

It feels like the Canadian system is afraid of the potential costs of fully acknowledging Lyme and there is no doubt that the symptoms are confusing and can be associated with other conditions including mental health and depression in general. Our doctors are great and repairing trauma but when it comes to diagnosing illusive problems or things they don't know much about they are...... not good.

You got that right! I might have it but I'll probably never know because I couldn't even convince either of 2 doctors to test me.

The first was at the ER the day I discovered the tick right in the middle of my back. It had likely been there for a few days and had grown quite large and had managed to hang on there despite being scrubbed with a brush in the shower a few times. I managed to pulll it off with tweezers and took it along with what sure looked like a bullseye rash at the bite site to the ER. The doctor there said it couldn't be a bullseye rash because it wasn't under the hair on my head. I guess he didn't know anything about Lyme's and googled for a picture and that's where it was in the photo he found. I tried to tell him that the rash occurred at the site of the bite and he looked at me as if to say 'What do you know? I'm the doctor here!'.

So I made an appointment to see my doctor for a 2nd opinion. The soonest I could get was a couple of weeks away and by that time the rash had faded to a very pale red spot and the tick had dried out and shriveled up. My doc did prescribe me antibiotics but only a 10 day course, and I'm not sure if they were even a type that would be effective against Lyme's. He didn't believe that I might have Lyme's, just thought it was maybe some non-specific bacterial thing.

I have symptoms that could be consistent with Lyme's but could also just be advancing age. I guess if it's just age it's inevitable but I sure would hate to think that it might be something treatable and I suffer for nothing.

Fet your results and email them to the Mayo clinic. Our system up here sucks for lyme. The USA i farhtther ahead. Pm if you need help. But often they will recomment a protocol based on your BW. You will have to pay for their findings. But better to get proper treatment. This might cost 1500 but you will talk to their specialist one on one ang get the help you need.

Demand a blood test. Keep going to doctors until one gets it done. Then you have the results and get proper care.

Canada sucks with this.

This is exactly what I was thinking.

So several doctor wouldn't even test for it even though they kept asking. They kept saying it's anxiety, migraines, insomnia, and etc but never giving a good diagnosis just kept brushing it off.

So they paid for their own test out of their own pocket to a lab in California called Igenix. The test came back positive.

They end up going back to their doctor who won't prescribe anything because he says he would like them to go to a specialist. Also because he says it's a 2 year dose of antibiotics and wants the specialist to monitor it. The other problem is that the Refferal may take a while to get.

To me that's unacceptable being that the longer you take to treat it the worse off you could be. These are the doctors they have been dealing with. Brutal.

My dad knows a guy who had Lyme and for three years he was trying to get doctors here to do the test. He ended up paying for a test in the USA and it came back positive. This was in Ontario too.

Perhaps you could contact the Dr. E. Murakami Centre for Lyme and ask if they can put you in touch with someone who will take this seriously.

http://www.murakamicentreforlyme.org/About Lyme Disease.htm

Dr. Murakami has dedicated most of his life to the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme Disease in Canada. It has been a very long, hard battle.

From his site:

"Although recent media attention has brought more awareness to Lyme disease in Canada, there exists a huge body of professionals who are ignorant to the current statistics and facts surrounding this disease. In light of this, there is a misconception that Lyme simply "isn't as bad as people think", or that it simply "doesn't exist" at all.
Dr. Murakami has alone, treated and consulted with over 3000 people that have presented positive serology for Lyme and co-infections in Canada. These people come from every province in our Nation and have recorded geographical bites obtained from every province as well. For anyone to claim that Lyme does not exist in ANY province is a blatant denial of the problem and a red-flag of how poorly educated our physicians truly are.
It is Dr. Murakami's goal to bring this problem to light and to help shed away the layers of mistrust, and misguided information to truly expose the truth and weak areas that need to be addressed by our current health care system behind this disease."

Thanks I'll look into it.

They better start taking it serious, there are insane numbers of ticks on the south of the st Lawrence in Quebec. I am sure many people are infected. I know my dad had pulled probably over a dozen out of various body parts in the last year.

I have to be honest...... a buddy at camp had one engourged....... he went to local clinic here and brought the tick in as a sample....

The staff took it seriously, put him on the medd immediately and sent it out for testing.....

It came back negative, but at least all of the bases were covered.....

It's no joke.
Ticks are INFESTING areas I frequent in eastern Ontario. We're talking ten on both pant legs every 20 yards. There's no possible way 1/10 of those doesn't carry lime.
Send any physician my way next fall and that'll be the end of that chat.
Every deer we have shot for the last 5-6 years was infested with deer ticks. This includes rabbits. And by association mice squirrels and probably birds. Our dogs have been covered in them, every single time out.
They're a plague where we are Area 67.

Yes it is crazy that our health care system is so behind on this. Like everyone said, push for the broad spectrum blood test or go to the states. Pay for the right test. Antibiotics are crucial early on. If misdiagnosed for a longer period, a whole slew of health issues can mask the root issue of the Lyme Disease.

High dosages of Vitamin C intravenously will also help immensely and a naturopath can assist with that. Be sure they do the blood test to ensure that you can handle high doses of Vitamin C; some people have issues with it.

The ticks are becoming more and more prevalent in all of Canada. Be sure to take the right precautions when out in the bush and know the difference and indicators of a Lyme ticket infested bite.

A few years ago I took my wife to the out patients ,after we found a tick on her back and the bulls eye rash. The tick was not enlarged. The Doctor said he did not think the tick had been on long enough for her to become infected, but to be on the safe side ,he gave her some strong antibiotics to take for two weeks.

I bought two pints of concentrated of Permethrin from Amazon.com. It's for horses or something but you mix it 20:1 with water and apply to clothing. It's cheaper than the Sawyer's premix.

My coworker was bit this fall and his doctor put him on the ten day antibiotics. The tick did come back negative from Health Canada or whoever you send it to. I think it was a few weeks to find out the results. His wife is a vet-tech and if you are willing to say it was found on Rover and pay $90, you can get the results in a few days. Crazy.
