I had walked into the edge of an old burn, and was mostly just there to be a tourist, but I called for moose, and was watching for things edible...

So I'm standing, looking for movement, and I hear thump, thump, thump kinda soft through the bush behind me. I look over and see a rabbit hopping along, about 10 feet back. It's moving at a pretty good pace. Really surprising how little noise it was making, for the speed.

About a minute later, I hear a twig snap off to my right, I look, and see a flash of grey moving towards me.

Really, I figured I was about to put a scare onto a coyote (Funny as hell when you get them with a "BOO!") but instead, a Lynx materialized out of the brush.

The cat was following the general direction that he rabbit had gone, looking like it was going to walk right up to me, then it turned down a bit better trail, and walked about 4 feet behind me. As I turned to look over my other shoulder, I scraped a willow that was between it and I, and it froze (both of us!), it stared at my legs for about 30 seconds, then disappeared in the general direction the rabbit went, not looking at all concerned.

About 20 minutes later, as the light was going down, I walked out to the road, maybe 20 yards away, and walked down about 200 yards to see if there were any last-light chickens out, and I looked back towards where I came from, and there was another lynx, just coming out of the bush from the other side from where I was for the evening. It was sitting on the road for a few minutes and calling into the bush, and another was calling back. I figure it was a family crew out trying their luck for grouse and rabbits as well.

Pretty damn neat to see. Kinda made my evening! Figure the one I saw up close was a youngster, but still darn cool stuff!

An encounter you will always remember I bet

I have seen a few over the years. last year I had one cross a big river bed in front of me and then stop behind a big dead tree and just sit and watch me walk by, not a worry in the world.

I had one come out of the bush about 30 feet from me up north of chipewyan lake a couple weeks ago, damned thing was bigger than my lab by quite a bit.It just looked at me for a bit then walked slowly down the trail.Actually unnerved me for a few seconds as I had never seen one anywhere near this big.Very big paws.

Seen two this year and got another one on my trail cam. Impressive cats they are.

This guy was sitting on a road killed deer last winter - he let me get within about 15' of him before he grumbled and walked about 50' back under a spruce tree...when I came back 15 minutes later, he was eating again (as he did for the next few weeks), so I obviously didn't bother him too much.

Here he's sitting under his tree; you can almost hear him grumbling "Bugger off, so I can get back to guarding my deer!" He looked like a pretty old Lynx to me. That deer might have been his ticket to surviving the winter.

Lynx breeding mostly takes place in February and males don't take time to hunt for food while they are searching for mates. Guessing that that photo was taken mid January, that could have been that cats last meal for quite awhile!
The other cool thing about them is that their weight is very deceptive. The cat pictured looks fair sized (tall and long) but probably weighs only 25lbs. Considering how many 18lb housecats I know, its doubly surprising.

X2 on that
When I was trapping, I made it a habbit to weigh all of my lynx and fox. The biggest lynx I ever caught weighed in right at 22 pounds. They are all leg. (very good to eat, by the way)
It takes a really big fox to weigh 13 pounds.
