Hi All you Ross experts:

I picked up a 1910 Ross the other day. The metal is is A-1 Shape, but sadly Bubba and his chainsaw have been at the furniture. It seriously looks like someone tried his hand at wood checkering with a Stihl. I have all the metal bits and pieces, but where can I go to get some new wood for this old girl?

My gunsmith said the rifle checked out for safety. He had no idea where to look for a proper stock.

I'll post pics as soon as I'm able.

THanks in advance.

Robert

After much consideration of the matter, I've concluded that there is absolutely nowhere to get a new stock.

People talk about making runs of them, but the costs and the fact that most Rosses differ from each other means it never happens. :(

Also, nobody is going to provide a pattern to get gouged/scratched up.

Years ago, Don Robinson had a pattern to carve a sporter stock for the Mk. III rifle. No idea if the chap who bought the carving business still has it.

There is simply no supply of replacement military pattern stocks.

Hate to suggest it, but one way around having repro stocks carved would be to go to a two piece stock, spliced under the band.
First, there would be no problem getting a cut stock to use as a pattern.
Second, this would avoid the very long stock, which is a complication for carving. The forend bit would be easy to duplicate. There would even be a market for forends, to stretch existing stocks.
The forend section would be from the same board, so colour match would not be an issue when finished.
Apart from there being no stocks available, nosecaps for Mk. III rifles are scarce.
Mk. II nosecaps can be had.

I have a new unused Mk. III stock that I will lend to someone who has a duplicator and is willing to make them. Handguard as well... I want one of each for the use of the stocks.
Should I stand back as the offers come flooding in ???
Oh, I also have a spare 1905 Mk. II *** star stock...same deal.

I wish that I did have a duplicator. :(:(

There's a board member who was working on getting a duplicator stretched to fit the long stocks. Haven't heard back from him in a bit though.
