Okay M14 experts here an interesting one for you.

I was out today verifiying zero on my Norc M14 and I was shooting what appears to be Canadian 147 gr surplus ball. I was shooting supported at 50 yards so I would know what the rifle's trajectory was doing at that range and I was ending up with a 2" group out of a cold barrel. Yup, 2" at 50...I am not happy. This rifle is capable of 1" to 1.5" at 100 and I've done it with the same scope, mounts etc..... but not with that ammo.

First shot would be centred and 3 inches high, second round would be 1 inch right (3 inches high) and third round 1 inch left (and 3 high). My hunting ammo is a 170 grain Core lockt reload that was 4 inches high at 50 but the second round was consistently 1 inch right then 3rd round would be dead on top of the first again.

Could some surplus be that bad or should I start looking at remounting my scope????

While many would say this fine for Minute of Whitetail, I don't like it (obviously I wouldn't use ball ammmo on deer).

I'm running an ARMS #18 mount that is properly mounted and rock solid, SWAN rings and a Burris Fulfield II 3 to 9 power scope. I wasn't hung over (maybe I shuld have been), I know how to shoot and the gun was clean. Zero to very light wind. Good light, solid braced position.:(

Any ideas?

Some guns don't like some ammo. I wouldn't be concerned, especially if you've gotten 1.5" groups with different ammo. Just use different ammo!

For instance, my Cooey .22 is accurate with Thunderbolts, but my 10/22 doesn't shoot them worth a sheeit. C'est la vie!

some surplus can be that bad- there's some of that ivi stuff that's absolutely terrible for zero- it goes bang and that's about it- you figure your bore is washed out until you try a box or two of commercial ( winchester white) or something and everything settles down- the 150 grain sp's or whatever winchester cheap stuff is loading now is pretty close to what it should be- i've had absolutely terrible luck with ivi

Yup, it sounds like everything is fine, your rifle just doesn't like that load. Shoot a group or two with ammo you know your rifle does like to confirm that everything is still as it should be.

These are the list of more consistent results in the milsurp world out of an M14..
#1)IVI 7.62 #2)Norinco Milsurp (very dirty) #3)Port 7.62 ...I've never tried the South African, Israeli or Yugo Milsurp yet...coming soon!

Tritium it is most likely just an ammo thing, here is what I've experienced.

- Hirtenberger surplus 2" @ 100
- Port. surplus 2" @ 100
- Federal Premium 150gr ballistic tip (can't remember the group size but it sucked)
- Winchester Supreme 150gr fail safe (can't remember the group size but it sucked)
- Remington Premier Match 168gr matchking 1.5" @ 100
- Remington Express Rifle 168gr. BTHP Match 15/16" @ 100

I also have an ARMS18. Surplus ammo is just that, some your gun will like others it may hate. Try some Port. or SA and see how that works. Port. has been very consistant in my gun.

I just can't believe how inconsistent some surplus stuff is. I've never had much call for it (we always used Premium factory stuff for the work I've done!).

:D :D :D Shucks, now you have to slum it with the rest of us! :D :D :D
