m 14 chamber/barrel

I just recieved an M14 that a friend had purchaced (he is away with work right now). After looking it over I noticed that the rear of the barrel (where the bullet chambers) has 2 large chunks missing. Since I am not farmiliar with this gun can you guys tell me if this is common, or is it supposed to be like that? I'll try to get pics up later.

Those "Missing Chunks" are the bullet guides and are supposed to be there!

You see, Jean Cantius Garand was a brilliant Canuckistani. He knew and anticipated that we needed those scalloped 'cuts' for FA fire.

Now all the AR15 flat top shooters are demanding M4 cuts in their receivers or else their dicks will fall off. The 'comeback kid', our beloved Norinco-Stinko M14's are way ahead of them regarding the feed cuts in the barrel / chamber area.
