M-14 Rifle Build Update

A couple years ago, full of pride and joy, I posted the following picture.

Now, even fuller of pride and joy, I post this picture, the result of hiding money from my wife for two years and lying about where I got parts. (And yes, that's the same carpet. Scary isn't it?)

Here we have the Krieger 18.5 chrome lined barrel; Vortec direct connect flash hider; Navy sight; National Match gas cylinder and piston; NM spring guide; new scope mount that allows access to my; Rooster tactical release, synthetic stock; rubber butt plate (cause I'm a wuss with soft shoulders);the sling off my M-1917; and a Bushnell scope (that I had around the house cause I can't afford a really expensive proper one). Turns out you can only hide so much money before the wife starts to complain about the lack of toilet paper in the house.

Thanks GGFB for the help with the build. I sure had fun, learned a lot. Only really bad part is that I haven't shot it yet because I don't have any money left for gun club membership. Oh well, that's next.

i was about to comment on that carpet,then i started looking at mine:eek: so i'll just shut up.

it would look truly awsome if you were to do a paint job on that stock now,say black.i've been using a rustoleum fine textured finish on mine with a matt clear.it will just make that scout look fresh and new.

I would have preferred various other things also. The benefit of the leather sling was it's proximity (my safe) and price (free). :)

I am thinking about the stock paint. Haven't decided exactly what but am going to pick up another stock at the gun show soon for playing with.

How about a range report ? I'm certain that no poodle rifle M4 can keep up with your M14 carbine !!

Very nice. I just finished my Scout a few weeks ago, you'll love shooting it. Very handy gun.

For the stocks this is what I did. First I blasted the existing paint off. Filled the selector cut out, bedded the action. My checkering was a little messed up so I sanded it all off. Then I used the bedliner in a can from Canadian Tire, practice spraying from different distances for the degree of texture you prefer on a piece of wood. I've used a bunch of different paint but the Camo paints in a can at Can. Tire worked best for me and an airbrush if you want to get a little fancy. For a clear coat I've used matte clear before but it's not as durable as I would prefer, that's the problem with clear since the more glossy the finish the harder it is. I went to Sherwin Williams Automotive and the have a clear coat in a can called something like "Clear Kut-in" for cars, costs about $13 but it'll do at least 3 stocks. Spray it on lightly from about 12" or so and rather than one heavy coat just mist it let it dry, mist again ect. With the texture it doesn't come out too shiny but it seems very hard, must let it reach full cure for a couple of weeks though.
 
I would like a range report too. I have heard one fella that says the shorties are rude little carbines that are no fun to shoot for extended periods. Can anyone deny or confirm that?

Unless the recoil is really ugly, I would love a gun like that...but I would lose the scope for myself.
 
m14 build

Looks like a great rifle. The only thing that I would change is the UNFIRED part. Put the list of other extras to the side and shoot that thing! No amount of frills will be as enjoyable as the opportunity to use it and listen to her cycle.

Have fun and don't worry too much about the arms race.

Pussy! They're not that bad. Recoil is about the same as full length, but there is a little more blast out the muzzle end. They're as shootable for extended periods as the full size, but that all really depends on your tolerance level more than anything else.

Nice rifle, I have two an 18.5" that Jeff Smith at Smtih Tactical did...damn I love it and I have a full lentght one with a Burrris (will post pics when I'm not so lazy!).

The Norcs are cheap, reliable and awesome when you set 'em up right!
