If I use Krylon on a synthetic stock should I use a primer first, or would it be ok to just layer it on with only the paint?
Yes, you want to primer the stock.
-First clean and degrease the stock.
-Then fill the selector and do the retianing pin Mod. Also fill/patch/sand any imperfections in the original finish (cracks/gouges, etc).
-Scuff the entire stock surface.I use a Scotchbrite pad.
-While you are at it, polish the stock ferrule as per NM specs.
-Clean & degrease again.
-Mask off areas not to be painted (IE: stock ferrule, front sling mount).
-Clean/Degrease once again.( I use surgical gloves at this point so I don't get any oil/grease from my hands/fingers on the clean surface.
-Spray the primer coat.Several light coats are better then one or two heavy coats.
-Let dry overnight.
-Now check for any imperfections that need further work.Grey primer works the best for showing up imperfections).Fix as needed and reprimer the areas.
-Give a light scitchbrite scuff to the primer.
-Now you are ready to do the base coat.
I use the Grey No Name Cdn. Tire primer that is in the auto body section.
For base coats I Use Krylon Military Camo Paint.
For clear coat I use Excel-Colorvision MATTE Clear Coat (Available at Rona).
Have fun!!!!
