m-14 USGI synthetic stock painting.

Primer is the key.
If you turn the can 180deg and read the instructions, it says to use primer on a prepped surface.

Before you prime...

Give the fiberglass a quick scuff with steel wool or 220 grit paper and then wipe it clean with alcohol or acetone. It will give the primer a 'tooth' to bond to.

If I use Krylon on a synthetic stock should I use a primer first, or would it be ok to just layer it on with only the paint?

Yes, you want to primer the stock.

-First clean and degrease the stock.
-Then fill the selector and do the retianing pin Mod. Also fill/patch/sand any imperfections in the original finish (cracks/gouges, etc).
-Scuff the entire stock surface.I use a Scotchbrite pad.
-While you are at it, polish the stock ferrule as per NM specs.
-Clean & degrease again.
-Mask off areas not to be painted (IE: stock ferrule, front sling mount).
-Clean/Degrease once again.( I use surgical gloves at this point so I don't get any oil/grease from my hands/fingers on the clean surface.
-Spray the primer coat.Several light coats are better then one or two heavy coats.
-Let dry overnight.
-Now check for any imperfections that need further work.Grey primer works the best for showing up imperfections).Fix as needed and reprimer the areas.
-Give a light scitchbrite scuff to the primer.
-Now you are ready to do the base coat.

I use the Grey No Name Cdn. Tire primer that is in the auto body section.

For base coats I Use Krylon Military Camo Paint.

For clear coat I use Excel-Colorvision MATTE Clear Coat (Available at Rona).

Have fun!!!!

Here is my US GI stock with Krylon brown (close to the original colour) It looks kind of boring but thats the way I like it since I'm unsure of my camo ability and I want it to look stock GI. It took me about 3 days of filling and sanding to get the selector and the disconnect filled perfectly but now it looks like it was purchased like that - no evidance of filling at all. I even matched the side groves in the top of the stock with a small file.

SKBY,

That is very cool. What did you make it with? or did you order the parts from the U.S. ?

Jeff

I got the F/A kit from GG&FB. I had to fabricate the mounting bracket out of aluminium. It was a cut/File/fit/repeat type of job.

VERY doubtful anyone in the U.S. would sell you these F/A conversions as these kits are classed differently in the U.S.

In Canada, having the conversion kit is no big deal, but in the U.S, having F/A parts/kits IS a big deal legally.

IIRC, it was a Winchester manufactured conversion that I had.......
