it's the steady diet of 180's that bends and breaks op rods etc- 1 or 2 boxes should be fine- 1 box to sight in, the other for actual hunting- however, with a good premium slug, the 165's would be easier on the system ,and mr moosie won't know the difference- just get the highest b/c and s/d you can and work your loads up from there- i've got both and keep the 180's for the savage 99 and the remmy 742-
if your rifle will handle 165gr bullets, use them. you don't "need" a 180gr to kill a moose. seen a couple fall to 6mm and 6.5mm pills just fine. 150gr .270 works great. no reason a lighter .30cal wouldn't do fine.
I assume you don't reload.
Stay away of any ballistic tips.
away of Federal HE 180 (unless you turn your gas sys off - not recomm.)
Black hills makes some wonderful 308 loaded win Barnes bullets - in the black box .
Remington makes some with scirocco.
I remember sierra GK being loaded by Federal... Canadian Tire carries them.
pretty much any partition or barnes 150- 168 loads would do.
I would say a barnes x bullet of 165 grain would be the way to go....150 might even do but I'd try the 165....I'd shy away from bullet weights over 168 grain....but that is just my humble opinion....
"They" say Barnes X bullets perform as well as, or better than, heavier bullets in the same calibre (on bigger game).....are we talkin 36 inch moose or 60 inch MOOSE?......if you are talkin the big boys I'd want at least a 30-06 with 200 grain Nosler Partitions if not a 300 mag or more.....again IMHO
I did loose a nice big moose with a 308 and 150 grain Barnes X bullets some 17-18 years ago and traded up to a 300 mag.....the 300 mag has done some AWESOME work....with 180 grain Noslers.....
That's what's wrong with the ballistic tips!!!
Unless you shoot a perfest broadside or head/neck.
My party had some bad experience with Hornady SST
Great for deer, but a little too much for mr. Moose.
Other than that, nothing really.
I've used 150 grain Silvertips in my real semi'd M-14 with no fuss. So a 168 grain bullet should do nicely. So will any good 165 grain hunting bullet.
The alledged 180 grain bullet rule applies to M-1's. 'Alledged' because in the 25 plus years I've played with M-1's and other milsurps, I've never once seen nor heard of any rifle being damaged by the ammo. Never heard of this until I got on the assorted forums.
A load I've used alot on moose is 165 grain Nosler partitions, the last 6 or so moose all went down with 1 shot. Excellant performance everytime, though nothing makes up for poor shot placement on something as big as a moose. I may be shooting a Buffalo with my Norc in a couple a days if it's sighted in to satisfaction, if i do I'll post up. Will be using speers 150 grainers in surplus ammo regardless of the rifle
Went to the range today and was able to get 1 1/4" 100 yd groups with speer 150 grain bullets in surplus ammo with the Norc. I found it hard to do any better than that with even with my remington 788 with the same ammo. Norc is bone stock with a Leopold 2-7x and "see thru" high rise scope rings on it. I was able to get the same groups as the remington on the bench with that ammo but offhand is another story due to the differences in trigger. I wiill definately use it for hunting this year anyway. Way to much fun!
