Anybody have experience with the Smith M and P in .45 acp?
Reliability, built quality, felt recoil and accuracy?

Thanks

Gilbert

I haven't shot it much yet due to very little range time, but it has run everything I have fed it just fine. Accuracy with BDX 230gr RN ammo is better than I am or likely ever will be. Felt recoil is quite low, noticeably softer than my 5" 1911 and much less muzzle flip. Can't really say on the build quality part with the short time I have had it, but it feels the same as my G19 and every other plastic pistol I have handled. I have small hands and the small backstrap works well for me considering it is a double stack .45 carrying 10 rounds. It is much smaller than a G21 frame/grip.

Ganderite has posted some pics of his results in the 25yd bullseye target thread that show very good accuracy. I believe he has installed the Apex trigger kit in his and I will be doing the same eventually. The stock trigger isn't bad for a duty pistol but it is not a great target trigger.

I never had any issues with mine, reliable with everything I fed it, including 200 grain LSWC reloads and capable of excellent accuracy. Recoil was quite soft and the grip size is very small for a double stack 45. Every time I see one, I'm tempted to buy another. As far as the trigger goes, get the Apex carry kit, or simply polish up the parts that rub and you'll be at or under 4lbs with a very nice, smooth trigger. M&P's generally are great, you can pull them apart and do a trigger job in a half hour.

Thanks guys for your answers,
I am tempted by one and as we live in Canada and therefore it will be for target shooting only, I wanted a reasonable accuracy.

Thanks

Bought mine, haven't shot it yet as the reg papers just came in last Friday. I was about to shoot in the range and I forgot they key to unlock the soft pistol case, doh!

The slide for the M&P 45 has a good heft to it. It's all steel, and I would think that the muzzle flip for a polymer framed gun will be low.

My initial impressions is that it is a well built pistol. The trigger in my experience during dry fire, the reset is not as tactile or audible as a Glock BUT you will learn the reset as you dry fire more.

Guide rod is also made of steel if that helps you.

The M&P45 is an excellent gun. Note that it is intended to be a service-grade sidearm and not a target pistol, but for casual shooting it's great. I recently did a holster course at my new club and shot very well with mine. Recoil is by no means excessive...the ergonomics of the M&P get a lot of praise, and serve to reduce recoil nicely. I go back and forth on whether I like my M&P45 or my Sig P227 better...IMO there's no higher compliment that a favorable comparison to a Sig...

one of the softest recoiling 45's i've fired.
very comfortable in the hand & points naturally.
super reliable, never had a stoppage.
very accurate but i agree with the need to 'smooth out' the trigger.
Burwell guns has an excellent link
