M&P 15 stock isn't long enough

Hey guys,

I have a M&P 15 in .223 with a magpul 6 position extendable stock. I feel like it is not long enough and have read many times that if I do not like something, I can just switch it out. Basically I am trying to find out if there is another extendable stock that I can install that extends out further? I have looked at Magpul's website but it seems they all basically do the same.

I thought I would ask here as there is probably a simple solution. I am hoping that there is an option to extend it up to another 3-4 inches. I'm 6" tall and don't have long arms so not sure why it feels so short when I have my eye up to the scope.

Thanks

Post a pic of your rifle and scope position. Or better yet, a pic of you holding the rifle in shooting position. Maybe you have the scope set too far back?
I'm 6' tall also and have longish arms. My retractable stocks are set at position 2-3 at most.
Another 3-4",as you put it, would be way too long a LOP for an AR platform, IMO.

Now if you had said the FAST stock on an XCR was too short, I would totally agree with you!

The scope is as far forward on the rail as is possible. I don't think I need another 3-4" but that much more would be nice I think. Guy at the gun store said it will fit different then a rifle which is what I am used to.

Here is an old picture of the scope. I can get another photo when I get home https://i.imgur.com/Cq19z3h.jpg

The way I hold it now, I have to pull my head back because I am too close. Maybe I am just holding the rifle wrong but it doesn't seem to fit me and I feel way to close.

The scope looks like it's in the proper position.

Is this your first AR? Chances are you'll need to adjust your shooting style if you're used to fixed stock long guns and higher mag. scopes.

Take the scope off the rifle and play around with the eye relief. Also keep both eyes open. Then put it back in the same position and adjust your stance, grip, arms etc.

While I haven't tried the Leupold scope that you use and it does look like it's positioned properly, many of use use similar scopes with our noses close to the charging handle. This likely means the stock extended to position 2 or 3.

Have you tried the rifle with your body squared-up behind the gun? This is a position many use with ARs to allow better recoil control and aiming on the move.

While below is with a red dot, the position wouldn't change if using a 4x

Using a 4x (I use my stock shorter now than this pic)

Yes this is my first AR and from looking at the pictures Farmboy posted, it seems like it's a normal position. That 2nd picture looks to me like he is very close and should be further back however, I only have hunting rifle experience until about 2 months ago. So for the 2nd picture again, I would image that is my position when holding the AR. Maybe I just need more trigger time with it to get used to the new shooting style.

I have my first practical rifle this weekend and maybe I'll talk to a few guys there to see if they have any tips or see any issues with the way I am holding the AR.

Thanks for all the new information. Thats why I asked.

Yes I hope so. It just felt like I was always too close to the scope so it felt a little off. Watching other people will also help as I have only seen guys with AR's bench shooting so I wasn't able to see the proper standing position.

This is not meant to make me sound like an a$$, and I'm not being critical but do you have issues with your eyes? I ask because I'm 6'3 and I don't have issues with using an AR stock totally collapsed

That's a honest question. No I have perfect vision for both close and far distances. If I collapse my stock, I swear I could put my eye into the scope opening, that's how close I would be. My eye relief is like 4 inches so I would be too close. I'll try again tonight when I get home to hold the rifle and just double check.

It certainly is different then good shooting a ole hunting rifle.

4" is plenty of eye relief. I am 6' and have had no problem with scopes on ARs. My scopes sit about the same place as yours.

Here are pictures of some standing AR-15s with scopes. The rear scope lens typically sits above the charging handle.

Thanks guys.

I played around with it tonight and yeah, it seems very similar to these photos plus others. Watched a few videos too on Youtube. Just gotta get used to being bent like that.
