Try it out with the M&P, it will work fine. If you get into it then maybe down the road get a shadow.
The added benefit with the Smith is not having to worry about the DA pull, hammer etc. Just draw and fire, simple. Simple is good when you are learning.
I own both of your listed guns and like both.

The Alberta IPSC Provincials were held this weekend.

Here are the Production choices

1st - CZ Shadow
2nd - STI GP6-C
3rd - S&W M&P Pro
4th - CZ Shadow
5th - CZ Shadow
6th - Glock G22
7th - CZ Shadow
8th - CZ Shadow
9th - STI GP6
10th - CZ Shadow

While not the most popular, the M&P is certainly capable of winning matches.

Absolutely! Shadows are popular for a reason (ie extremely easy to shoot) but nothing wrong with M&P at all

But is it just a matter of people buying CZ Shadow's for IPSC because the guy in front of you said they were good, and so on..

If it fits your hand, is accurate and works every time you pull the trigger, then it's a good pistol for IPSC.

I've seen more than a couple of shooters using them. Get a holster, a bunch of mags and go crazy.

It's more than just trend going on here. I think the key points to the Shadow's popularity in IPSC are:
-heavy weight makes it recoil like a hot .22 allowing for significantly faster followup shots
-widely available factory parts that allow considerable modifications to the gun while keeping it Production legal
-5+ lb DA trigger pull for only the first shot of each stage followed by 2-2.5lb SA trigger pulls for all subsequent shots

All this combines to make a gun that is extremely easy to shoot well. I'm definitely not saying Shadows are better (I personally dislike Shadows) and of course with training/practice, a shooter can duplicate/exceed these results (*ahem* Bob Vogel with a Glock) but the Shadow can be mastered with far less effort so it's definitely the easier choice and that's why it's just dominating on the Production circuit up here.

Was there a trigger pull test ?

I know some guys who don't use theirs in Production because even if it was not modified, it was not making the 5# trigger pull test after several k rounds and got tired of being bumped to Open Division

If you are just getting acquainted with handguns in my opinion it is easier to get started with a striker fired pistol.

When I took my Blackbadge course we had a few people shooting CZ guns. Having to constantly decock the gun definitely made the course much more difficult for the brand new shooters taking the course. I'm not saying don't get a CZ just giving you a heads up.

Remember, you can always change you mind later and most likely will if you find IPSC to you taste.

Yes.

Full compliance. Trigger test and chrono.

Complete newbie to IPSC have only shot 2 qualifiers but I did see a number of M&P's. If yours has the mag disconnect it looks like a PITA but is doable. I am a big believer in shooting what you own first which is why I shoot classic division with my 1911 - it is all I had. Down the road I may try production with a shadow...

Excellent, Thank you all somevery good info and helpful opinions i think ill just stick with my m and p for now and see what happens. Any suggestions for a good holster and gun belt?

Bladetech DOH for the holster.

A riggers belt will work just fine, but a dedicated CR Speed or Double Alpha are best.

I prefer CR Speed mag pouches.

Don't waste money on Uncle Mikes or something low end. The few extra dollars for a Bladetech are worth it.
