My local club hosts service rifle competitions from time to time. My understanding is the rifle can be any caliber. The design must have at one time been used by a military agency. I don't have enough spare time to attend regularly. Therefore a not willing to put down $1000+ on an M1 or No4 Enfield etc... and .30 cal ammo is expensive.

I've been hearing very positive things about the M&P sport 2 AR15. I've been using their new M&P 9 2.0 pistol (fine gun). The sport 2 AR15 is considered a 1.5-2.0 MOA rifle. Will it compete on a casual level with other higher power service rifles?

I'd be curious to know the thoughts on overall value and performance from current or past owners of this rifle.

Thanks

Since you're limited in time and funds, there is certainly nothing wrong with the M&P II. If your Club allows any calibre, then go shoot for fun and take it for what it is. No offense intended but if you're new at this, the rifle will probably shoot better than you can. The S&W will basically perform like any AR in a Match. It is a fine gun for casual competition and definitely worth the price.

Equipping your Lego with all the go fast doodads will be a money sink hole though!

There should be a Sticky just for the M&P! I think S&W hit the mother lode with this rifle with the price point in Canada!

Excellent answer and helps me out. I shoot mostly small bore anschutz during the winter. I built a beauty Savage model 10 .308 precision setup. But to my knowledge the model 10 has not seen active military use previously. Never even held an AR15 before so I was curious if the sport 2 would keep up. Sounds like it might be exactly what I'm looking for.

Thanks

Free float the barrel, maybe replace the trigger, and feed it some decent ammo, and you should be able to get it closer to the 1 MOA range. I was definitely gonna shoot my M&P for service rifle this year, but I'm building an SLR with a match barrel and a Geissele trigger that will fit the bill much better I think (And I've been told that the SLR is close enough to the AR15 that it should count)

As Scotty said, an after market trigger like a Geisselle, Trigger Tech, Timney or ACT will smooth out the pull for more accurate long distance work. But I would shoot it first. You’ll soon know what you like or want to change. Don’t jump on the modding bandwagon too quickly or you’ll end up with a bin of parts and a pizzed off wife!

I’m not sure if Service Rifle allows optics or iron sights only but that is another place you can spend money. You have to decide on a red dot, reflex, magnifier or scope. Each has its pros and cons. Read up or ask questions here.
Good luck on your purchase and enjoy your rifle.

Finally had a chance to check one of these rifles out in person at Cabela's. Very nice quality for less the price of even the norinco clone. I couldn't not buy it. Now looking for a nice sling for service rifle competition this summer.
