M&P question

Ok so I got my M&P today and I just couldn't resist hitting the slide release when the slide was locked back without a round (yes I know this is bad, which is why I only wanted to do it once without a round) but when I hit the slide release, the slide stayed back and wouldn't move forward unless I actually grabbed it and moved it, and even with one of the magazines it was a bit of a pain.

Now my question is the gun made in such a way that the slide won't actually slam forward unless there is something in the chamber? Or is there something wrong with it?

Having never have used the slide lock to release my M&P, I can only surmise what went on:

Given the stiffness of the slide lock on the M&P series of pistols, I would guess that when you "released" the lock it bound up on the slide and didn't fully disengage from the slide. This would hold the slide back.

But that's just a guess, based on my experience.

If you have an empty magazine in the gun, then yes, it locks open even if you rack the slide or hit the slide release.

If you have either a magazine with a round in it OR no magazine inserted, the slide should ram home into battery by either racking the slide or hitting the slide release.

The slide release on mine was ridiculously stiff for the first little while though. It breaks in pretty fast, but for the first few dozen uses it's really really stiff.

Mine is probably just really stiff.

And I can't find snap caps. All the places I go to are sold out of 9mm

The slide stop can be REALLY stiff on a new M&P. I remember mine taking skin off my thumb, literally. I just kept working it, without a magazine, so the follower wasn't engaging the stop. Eventually it became smooth. I understand that some people sand the stop (Very lightly) to help it along.

P.S. I wouldn't say that using the slide stop as a release is unthinkable/horrible/unforgivable. It's your pistol, do with it what you like.

So just keep pushing the slide back and catching and uncatching? Makes sense

Yup...

If you're bored you can insert an empty mag when the slide is fully forward, rack (It will stay open automatically because the follower is engaging the stop), drop the mag, then press the slide stop. Don't forget to repeat endlessly :D

P.S. I have some A-Zoom snap caps and find them useful. They can be bought on Ebay.
