Hey guys,
I have a bit of a newb question to ask the forum. I've been noticing that some M&P's both in 9mm and .40 say "stainless" on the left side of the slide and some don't. From what I've read on the M&P line all the slides are suppose to be stainless. Can anyone shed some light on this before I leave mine out in the rain??

The slides are stainless but WILL rust - must be a low corrosion resistant grade of stainless although of sufficient strength.

my M&P is marked stainless and has rusted on two ocassions - do not shoot in the rain and put it away wet.

I think any gun will rust if you put it away wet... that being said, my MandP has been shot in rain/snow plenty of times, nothing more then a quick wipe down at the end of the day to prevent rust, I dont oil or anything... but go for it if thats your bag

puting a gun into storage wet, especially if its stored in a case as opposed to a ventilated locker or safe is begging for trouble, stainless or no

question for ampegor, what did you do to remove the rust? and did it mess up your finish at all? I was just going to use CLR on a knife/ beater shotgun, but if you have better suggestion im all ears

Sorry to jump in here but I recently struck a deal with a local fellow for an unfired M&P which he had stored for some time in the factory case. The deal was completed & ATT received so we were making arrangements to meet & transfer the gun. When he opened the case, lo and behold there was the beginning of rust speckling on the slide. Being an upright seller he offered to cancel the deal & refund my money or knock off some cash if I still wanted the gun. I decided to take a look at it before cancelling so I met him at the range and took some Flitz and a soft rag with me. A few minutes of rubbing and most of the speckling was gone so I bought the gun and he deducted some cash. When I got home I applied some Break Free to the remaining speckling, let it soak for a while and then carefully took some 0000 steel wool to it. I would say that 95% of the speckling was removed and what remained is virtually unnoticeable. The slide might be a little shinier than when I started but nothing of note and I ended up with a brand new 9mm M&P, 4 mags, case, grips, etc. for $500 so overall a good deal. Flitz is a great polish and not very abrasive and Break Free really seems to attack rust without hurting the gun. I've used it on lightly rusted blue finishes and as long as the rust hasn't reached the pitting stage the bluing comes out looking like new. Use 0000 steel wool but don't go crazy with the rubbing.

I have the M&P 9. I am looking at the M&P .22. Any big concerns over the alluminum slide in terms of longevity, durability etc?

most .22 conversions use a aluminum frame, they only ones that dont are the ones where only part of the slide moves, using a full steel slide doesnt work with .22 in full size pistols
