Is the .30 carbine round hard to find at all? Is it similar in price to .45acp? I am really torn whether to buy a nice little restricted M1 or a VZ58(resricted) for my first foray into the world of carbine/rifles...any opinions here?

the .30 m1 carbine ammo is NOT available surplus none around anymore
winchester makes the "white"box .30 carbine and around here its like $20. for 50 rounds when and if its in stock

I fired both yesterday, either one is a cool gun, you can shoot 7.62x39 for about $3/20 compared to 30 carbine for $8/20 depends on how much you want to shoot.... I say go for both.

Now on the other hand you could get an SKS for anywhere between $100-$400 and you can shoot it for $3/20. I just bought an SKS on here for $125 just for the hell of it.

I would get a nice USGI carbine in a heartbeat over the VZ.....
Much better sights, lighter, far better fit and finish, cheaper, far more accurate, little or no recoil, saw use in 2 wars........great little guns. Lebarons has UMC for $17/50 and marstar sells WinWhiteBox in bulk fairly cheap.

+1
I just picked one up in the EE forum and it is a great little shooter.
Ammo is about $20 for 50 in my area and is always in stock.

I wouldn't mind a M1 either, but I'd like to stick a syntetic stock on it, but the only kind I can find are ugly folders for it.

Sucks that it's restricted. Still I want one as well.

My M1 carbine is non-restricted. I picked up a big pile of ml-surp brass back before supplies started shutting down. Reloads with jacketed bullets and my own cast ones are cheap. Fulton Armoury used to sell 5 rd mags that were cut from 15 rounders.

Well each year at the local easter show I usually find some surplus ammo, I got 8 boxes of Lake City Ammunition from the 50's last year...the only problem now is that I don't want to shoot the stuff as it *is* not overlly available. Normally I find the UMC stuff the best deal going and stock up on it whenever I can.
