M1 Carbine damage -- repairable?

I was at the range the other week and had what could charitably be described as a range ending failure. After a shot my M1 Carbine failed to cycle and I found the operating rod/charging handle out of its pathway and the bolt stuck forward. I then saw that there was a piece of metal missing from the channel that the operating rod slides in.

Obviously shooting it any further only invites further similar failures -- I've never had to go to a gun smith so I don't have any real frame of reference whether this is repairable. I would think so, but one never knows.

I suppose a really good TIG welder could repair the receiver. I do not know a gunsmith who does that sort of work.
USGI or commercial?
You might just have a M-1 parts kit on your hands.

Yes, it definitely repairable.
I suggest you contact Vulcan Gun Refinishing in Ontario (519) 723-4009. That is right up their alley. Nick has repaired far worse damage than that. M1 Carbines and Garands are kinda their specialty.
The bigger question is to figure out Why that happened. Nick will be able to help you with that as well.
