just purchased an m1 carbine and it came with multiple magazines, all pinned. i asked the guy at the gun store if they came like that and he said no, he pinned them. i thought they were exempt from the mag capacity law?

Nope, the M1 Garand riflle is. Not the M1 Carbine.

Wish it was though, all my mags would then be restored to there former glory. But as it is now with the laws in place it must be capped to 5 rounds.

Fremen is absolutely correct... here's the legislation that applies (from Justice Department's website):

(2) Paragraph (1)(a) does not include any cartridge magazine that

(a) was originally designed or manufactured for use in a firearm that

(i) is chambered for, or designed to use, rimfire cartridges,
(ii) is a rifle of the type commonly known as the “Lee Enfield” rifle, where the magazine is capable of containing not more than 10 cartridges of the type for which the magazine was originally designed, or
(iii) is commonly known as the U.S. Rifle M1 (Garand) including the Beretta M1 Garand rifle, the Breda M1 Garand rifle and the Springfield Armoury M1 Garand rifle;

These last two posts are referring to barrel length. Original barrels are 18" long. You need to rebarrel the M1 carbine to a longer length to unrestrict it. Barrel extensions are a no-no and do not count.

Throwing in my two little shiny pennies worth.

maybe ask around.... there might be some 15rnd or 30 rnd mags floating around out there.......
Uh, there might be, but they're illegal. Recommending someone should do something illegal on CGN isn't a good choice for your first post.

Just to clarify this, there's no such thing as a grandfathered magazine. They're either 100% prohibited to everyone or they're 100% legitimate for everyone, whether they own a firearm capable of using that mag or not.

There are examples of unrestricted factory rifles. The Iver-Johnson version springs to mind.

I did not recommend an illegal activity. If he found a 30rnd and it wasn't pinned he would get it pinned to 5rnd.(Like all of us would)
I assumed he wanted a longer mag for the *Look*.

You assumed he was was looking for illegal mags....and you assumed I was implying to look around to find some.

With those ugly metal upper handguards.

"...Iver-Johnson version..." Yep. IJ made some special 19" barrel carbines in the early 80's after the carbine was declared restricted. The sad part is that there weren't many made and they're scarce.
IJ is gone now. The current incarnation does not have any old IJ parts, drawings or firearms either. They do mention a plan to make blue and SS carbines in the future, but there's no mention of barrel lengths.

Hmmm...

Some fun ideas for the M-1 carbine vias-a-vis magazines (though admittedly difficult, sacrilegous, fanciful and/or odd):

1) Get some Automag III magazines (8-round pistol magazines) from the new High-Standard company. They are set for .30-carbine, so that gives you 3 more rounds per magazine, as opposed to the "pinned" ones. The tricky part may be to configure an M-1 to take them.

Additional point: If you could find an "Iver Johnson Enforcer pistol" magazine, that too might be fun...but in reality, be aware that mag-well modifications, etc., etc....

2) Re-chamber the M-1 for another pistol-calibre cartridge and get it to feed off of 10-round pistol magazines. Some "hot" ideas (though not necessarily 10-rounders) include the 7.62x25mm TT cartridge, the .460 Rowland (which does come in pistol magazines), and even the .45 Winchester Magnum (see: http://www.theothersideofkim.com/index.php/ggps/6176/).

Just some food for thought...

P.S. While I do read Kim's website every now and then, I am in no way endorsing all of his views, etc., etc., sheesh...

"...an "Iver Johnson Enforcer pistol" magazine..." Same mag and just as evil.
"...Re-chamber the M-1 for another pistol-calibre cartridge..." The .30 Carbine carttridge is not a pistol cartridge. It was developed specifically for the M-1 Carbine. Changing the cartridge it fires won't change its restricted status. The carbine has been restricted since 1978 due to its barrel length. The calibre is irrelevant. The only way to un-restrict it is to put on a longer barrel and you'd still require 5 round mags.
The Carbine can be turned into a straight pull bolt action by removing the gas piston and replacing it with a solid plug. Of course, it would have to be a permanent conversion.
