The majority of M1 Carbines had the early "flip" style non-adjustable rear sights replaced by either the milled or stamped style adjustable rear sights while in military use. The adjustable sights, particularly the stamped type, tend to overhang the serial number to the point where it can be fully or partially obscured.
US Army tech manuals stipulated that any carbine where the s/n was fully obscured by the rear sight overhang would have the s/n re-stamped on the receiver in front of the sight and a special stamping fixture was available for this purpose. I've owned and handled quite a number of Carbines where s/n was obscured, but have never seen one where the s/n was re-stamped in front of the sight per the US Army tech manual. Curious if anybody out there in CGN land owns one with the s/n re-stamped in this manner??
