Ok, did a search and didnt find anything.

I am thinking out loud here and haven't fully checked this through yet, so opinions would be welcome.

I have a couple spare M1 carbine rear sights and was thinking of modding one to put on a 10/22. What i was thinking of doing is modding a readily available scope mount base and modding the rear sight to fit on top of the base. If possible, I would then install see through rings so i can use the sight and also have a scope for the rifle at the same time.

What does everyone think? What would my distance need to be from the top of the reciever to the centre of the aperture?

Thanks

You'd have to change the front sight too.
"...install see through rings..." They tend to put the scope very high.

here is how they did it on a mini14, i know its not the same but the process of setting it up and sighting it in requires you to adjust the blade for new sight height.
Hope that gives you an idea.

The factory one would probably be too short.
Might be odd using a peep sight and see through scope rings.

I recall seeing a 10/22 modded into a m1 carbine on CGN that had a m1 carbine rear sight on it.
Edit: opps it was actually in the 09 Gun Digest

Here's a couple internet links:

One of the unique and distinctive features of this conversion is the utilization of G.I. sights. All it takes to attach the front sight and integral band is to drill and tap the sight base in front of the rear face of the blade for a simple 6-32 set screw, which holds the sight securely in place.

The rear sight is a bit more involved. I cut a piece of the aluminum scope base furnished with the 10/22 and dovetailed it to accept the issue G.I. rear sight.

Hmm...

By adding the M1 Carbine sight to a sight base, you will add significant height to the rear sight and thus the existing front sight ramp would be too short. To correct this you will need to replace the front ramp with a taller one.

Have a look at this document, and you will see what I mean:

This is a good reference if you are into "do it yourself sights" like me...

On the other hand, if you want to put a peep sight onto a 10/22, why not just pick up a Williams WGRS-RU22:

Much cheaper and a whole lot less work than milling a mount. (Unless of course you are like me and take pleasure in the pain and aggravation of manufacturing tight tolerance parts.)

Best of luck,
