M1 Carbine to 500 ... 9 Hole Reviews

It hits low at 300 on the 300 sight setting. Ammo he used is either under-powered compared to what the Military used when the carbine was targeted. Or... front sight is too high which means it was either replaced, or never zeroed to begin with. Could be both! I had no problems with my Winny hitting to point of aim at 300 with proper spec ammo.

BTW, the type 1 barrel band on that carbine are much revered by the collector crowd, but not so much by the shooting crowd. The Bayonet barrel band is best for a shooter.

Many years ago when I was about 9 my Dad, brother and I were shooting at a 500 yard range in the UK. I first was given a K98 to shoot but even with a life jacket on to pad my shoulder the recoil knocked me right down on my rear end. The only thing less powerful that we had to hand was an M1 carbine. I recall aiming about 4 feet above the target and hitting it. We were all very surprised. It was a long time ago but I remember it well. The range was behind a small town called Starcross in Devon. I recall going to a pub called the Atmospheric Railway after which is still there. Strange the things you remember more than 50 years later!

I have been using my 1945 Inland as a replacement carbine for under 100 yd 3 gun matches since the OIC interfered with my original match rifle . It has its shortcomings, it is not as ergonomic as an AR, there are not many accessories for the M1 Carbine like mag pouches, initially brass is a bit of a problem. Reloading for it is easy with either FMJ of cast lead bullets. Cast lead allows me to shoot in PCC matches where the steel targets are not at long distance and minimizes ricochets'. I mounted a Burris Fast Fire 3 on it and I have had a hoot shooting it. Unfortunately on the last stage of first match the extractor broke, causing me to buy a second (1943 Winchester) "just in case" carbine if it ever happens to me again in the middle of a match. But then its a 77 year old gun. That being said I remember my extractor breaking on a 5 year old AR 15.

I'm long past the day where I go to a match to "win the pink Cadillac", so I'm not worried about coming in at the bottom of the totem pole. But I do get style points and have had many compliments on how flawlessly it runs. Hark, I hear that there is a M1 Carbine locally that needs some TLC, a 3rd Carbine could be in the future. Do I worry about another Liberal OIC down the road, NOPE. The current and a future Liberal government is going to screw legal law abiding gun owners anyways so I may as well enjoy myself while I can.

I have a real soft spot for my M1 as well. Did you mount your optic on the reciever/rear sight, or did you get a handguard picatinny rail?

I'm torn: I have a rear-sight mount, but am kindof spooked about installing it and knocking out the original sight.

I still wish someone would make a decent magazine pouch. I use HSGI tacos and Esstac Kywis that hold well enough, but take up more room on the belt than they really need to.

I bought the Ultimak picatinny rail handguard. With the Burris Fast Fire 3, I can still use the iron sights if I turn off the dot (or forget to turn it on at a match).

As for mag pouches, I had a friend in Montana order for me a M1 Carbine Stock Pouch and a M1 Carbine Grab and Go, excellent pieces of kit, too bad he does not export to Canada https ://olongapooutfitters.com/index.php?dispatch=products.search&status=A&pshort=N&pfull=N&pname=Y&pkeywords=Y&search_performed=Y&q=Carbine

Breakage can be minimized by spraying brake cleaner around the top edges of the extractor (in the spring/detent area) washing out the carbon buildup. If the extractor can't move against the spring to snap over the cartridge rim, it will usually break. Same goes for the Garand, although '06 and 308 cartridges don't usually leave as much filthy powder residue on the extractor as the 30 Carbine rounds do.
