I want something fun and interesting for gopher shooting this summer after i read the thread about the spanish destroyer carbine... then i thought about other possibilities like the M1 carbine. I dont know much about any of the US military arms but i like the look of the small Carbine round. Are they very accurate? Ive heard of story of the bolt locking lugs blowing off.. is this common? What do the non restricted ones usually cost?

Lovely little carbine to plink with but I wouldn't try to shoot gophers with it. Most M1 carbines have an accuracy of around 4-5MOA. Mind you, if you miss the first time you can get a quick 2nd shot off. After that, well.. I guess it takes a pretty stupid gopher not to disappear before the 3rd shot :p
 
IMHO, an SKS would be better, my shining example of chinese craftsmenship consistantly hits a 6" gong at 100 yards. My M1 Carbine 6" gong at 25 yards, if lucky. M1 30cal $25 for 50 rounds, SKS $17 for 50 rounds.

I had an iver johnson m1 carbine for a while.

I took it out to the gopher fields a couple of times. It's alright if you can find hollowpoints otheriwse its nothing too spectacular. FMJ just go right through.

FWIW I could easily geta consistant 3 moa out of it at the range.
 
Firearms in .30 Cal Carbine and 7.62x39mm are not exactly gopher guns, even at 10 yds distance. If you want anything half decent in a military caliber for gophers go to a 5.56mm 5.56mm/.223 are great gopher guns. The price is higher but the accuracy is there.

Sounds like your M1 carbine is broken - I have 4, and all of them will easily put 10 rounds into a 6" circle at 100 yds - and thats with me shooting them ! A good shooter could probably do a lot better than that.

As regards the ammo cost, try the Federal American Eagle .30M1 - $18.00 per box of 50.
 
I agree with LeanordJ, while the little M1 Carbine is not a tack driver, it's accuracy at 50 yards is VERY acceptable for "battle". At 100 yards, it tends to spread out a bit but should AT LEAST print 6" groupings, usually a bit better.

Same experience here...but I rarely get better than 6-7"

A NR M1Carbine will run you at least $300, likely $350.
