At the range last week (apologies if "dude" is on the board, I just found it funny):

Dude - "Hey, that's an old war bird, what is it?"
Me - "It's a Garand"
Dude - "What's it shoot?"
Me - "30'06"
Dude - "Oh, British!"
Me - "Uh, American, you know, the one that goes 'ping' after you fire 8 shots"
Dude - looks confused
Me - "You know, like in every WWII movie"
Dude - "Never heard of 'em"
Me - "It's the main battle rifle the Americans used in WWII"
Dude - looks suspicious, but continues "Wow, you've got an UZI!"
Me - "It's a P90"

...and so it continued...

If you REALLY wanted to confuse him, you shuold have answered "Dude - "Oh, British!""
with "No, this particular one isn't Lend-Lease"

yea.. i know the kinda of guys, but i treat them nice, whenever i take my mosin repro sniper out, i get asked alot of weird questions.

last "milsurp unaware" comment i got was i regards to my m1 carbine, "is that a ruger?" :p

JWC your age is starting to show. Most young fellows at the range are only vaguely familiar with the Lee Enfield, have never heard of a Garand and don't pay any attention to the rifles being used in movies unless it's an AK47 or an M16. The full wood really confuses them as only plastic furniture is recognised. bearhunter

That's why I love bringing my Garand to the range. It throws all you old farts for a loop when you see a youngin' like me shooting something almost 3 times my age. :D

The funny thing is that my 10 year old son and most of his friends can name all my military guns because they 'use' them in video games. He came out of his room a week or two ago and said "is it possible to buy an SVT-40?" He was really excited about getting one so I ordered it the next day. He thinks he's pretty cool because he's shot a REAL Garand. He also thinks we need a K98 (on the way). I had to shush him from mocking the above "dude" at the range. I guess video games aren't all bad...

Funny you mention that JWC - my 10 year old son can also name all the WW2 small arms and knows them well. Those video games have made him a big (and surprisingly knowledgeable) fan of WW2.

Hehe, that's priceless Jim.
It actually explains your interest in old Milsurps lately.;)

flim flam! Most of my fellow young 'uns that I shoot with know nothing about fantastic plastic. The average age of my rifles are 70-ish years. There is nothing new under the sun, as plato said...

None of the "average" members at my range know anything about any of my guns, old or new. They may recoginize the LE's, but they don't know what the hell a SVT is.

And when I pull out my shorty AR, they usually say something like "aren't those illegal."

If it's not a Remugerchestavage they don't have a clue.

Last time I brought my Garand to a range in Sask, the best one I heard was,
" Is that an AK47?" No lie.....
Once Silverback brought his Garand to an all day fun shoot, one ignorant old drunk thought his rifle "broke" when the clip was ejected, and started to point and laugh????

Its amazing the depth of ignorance out there, especially amongst supposedly avid (older)hunters/shooters.
However my 15 year old nephew, who has never hunted or shot a firearm, knows exactly what a Garand is.

I cant remember how many times a 10 year old indentified every gun I owned...while their 'dad' was completely oblivious

PPsh..."thats a Tommy Gun"
MG-34..."Thats a MG-42"
Uzi..."thats a mac10"
Sterling..."thats a Uzi"
Glock17..."thats a .45"
P-38..."thats a Luger"
MP-44..."thats a AK47"
etc etc etc

Now that's funny!

Too funny...

Of course, there I was at work the other night, with the radio tuned to a local "Classic Rock" station, and the 'Stones were happily Painting it Black...

One of my colleagues wanders by, and asks my to switch the station from the "Contemporary Adult Easy Listening" to something more lively.

I must be getting old, too!

Never heard of a Garand, Forsooth!

Neal
