Hey all,

So after a couple years of owning and enjoying my M1, I finally noticed that mine is missing its spacer plate on the front hand guard. :|

Part 066

So basically the oprod is just exposed through the bottom of the hand guard, has anyone else found this on their M1's? Mine is a Danish refurb (WRA) was this something the Danes did?
I would like to find one to put in it, but in the mean time can I keep shooting it without consequence? I can see it keeping dirt and mud out but I don't think it really experiences that at the range haha.

Thanks fellow milsurpers!

Well as embarrassing as this is and after looking at my M1, I have realized the plate is in fact there and it sits between the op rod and the barrel. Not on the bottom of the hand guard bellow the op rod. A mod can delete the thread or keep it around so other can learn (point and laugh).

This is a useful thread. Not long ago someone had a pic of a Garand for sale on the EE having the front handguard liner installed upside down! One would really need to work at doing that. I'm a bit concerned about the quality of some of the Garand builds that people are now doing using the bargain priced Italian receivers. There are safety, functionality and accuracy concerns when assembling a Garand or any other rifle from parts. It isn't just a matter of clamping a parts set together. The Boyds stocksets that people are using are variable in fit and some take quite a bit of work to get them to fit properly. The Boyds handguards seem simple at first blush, but the rear guard often takes a lot of work to get a proper fit and the front guard can have issues with the factory inletting for the liner. I currently have 2 front guards in the project box where the inletting for the rear tabs of the liner is way too deep. These are not usable until the voids are filled with an epoxy filler.

It is good that it's still there. Removing the handguard liner was a common mod done when accurizing by various smiths. It also usually meant that the front guard was often glued and screwed to the lower band. Many people pick up a garand by the front hand guard if the rifle is stored muzzle up. Without the liner, the guard can split in half if grasped too tightly.
