Hello Gentlemen,

Not too long ago I picked up a wartime K98 and an M1 Garand. I love these rifles but lately I've been toying with the idea of mounting scopes on them. I'm not the kind of person that would ever consider drilling or tapping original wartime rifles so I am just wondering what kind of scope mount (if any) I could install which would ensure that a) nothing is damaged and b) that any changes made would be 100% reversible.

I've heard of scout scope mounts but I'm not very familiar with them, can anyone please shed some light on this topic for me?

Thanks for everyone's time.

A scout scope is a replacement for the leaf sight on the mauser. It is usually a picatinny rail for the use of optics. The garand, has never had such an arrangement to the best of my knowledge. I've only ever seen drilled & mounted offset scopes - because of the en block clips.
I wouldn't reccomend the scout scope, only because they require loctite, and have placement screws that can damage the sides on the sight bridge. Personally, I wouldn't risk it. You are better off finding a bastardised mosin nagant, or SMLE 1 mkIII for such a project. They would only cost around a 125+/- for such a purpose, without ruining your bigger investments.
And, hey, you get another gun!

Cheers!

Thomas

If you want a scout scope on the M1 Garand, get the Ultimak handguard.

h ttp://ultimak.com/m12.htm

It serves its purpose and would work great for hunting or whatever with no change to the original firearm. These are a quality product not some cheap crap, therefore the price.

You have a few options:

1. Modern Mount - Scout mounts as mentioned about. Usually you remove and replace the rear sight with a weaver styled mount. The new sight can be removed and the original sight can be replaced without harming the rifle.

2. Original or Repro of Original Mount
a) For the k98 ebay and Numrich gun parts sells a zf41 styled rear sight which creates a Zf41 styled rail system for the ZF41 scope. Again no damage is created to the rifle. You would also need a repro scope/mount or if you can find one, you could then mount an original ZF41 scope/mount. This is more of a marksman rifle vs a sniper rifle as it is only a 1.5 x zoom.
b) For the M1 Garand you can purchase the various parts for an M1D sniper either original or repro. Again, Numrich, Ebay, Northride, Sarco could help you. By simply swaping out parts which can be re-swaped back without damaging the rifle you can make a M1D sniper. Unless you have an M1D that is documented or from the Civilian Marksmanship program all M1D snipers are considered clones south of the border as so many original parts were sold as surplus and can easily be mated to any M1 rifle. This happened post and late war on many M1 Garands.

I hope this helps.

Cost will vary from $200 for a scout set up, and for original parts K98 ZF41 or Garand set up you might be sinking up to $2000

Thanks for all the information guys, I really appreciate it!

J996, the link which you posted interestes me but I see that screws are needed, do you know what they screw into?

The rail is attached to the barrel by clamps to achieve a rock solid mount. The screws thread into those clamps, there is no modification to the rifle. Ultimak is good stuff.
