looking for info on putting a 7.62 barrel on my M1 Garand. i have herd about the U.S. coast guard putting in inserts but that didn't last long. is there any one out there that has info on were i can get a barrel that is 7.62 or has info if that can be done. i have looked on ebay and have found a kit but just wondering what peoples ideas and if there is any thing like available in canada thanks, i tried to use the search but it came up with the

Tradeexcanada has M-1 .308 barrels listed for $200. Don't know of a less expensive source. Strip the rifle, remove the old barrel, torque in the replacement, finish ream as necessary, reassemble. Some folks install a spacer block in the magazine.
I had an M-1 converted years ago, great shooting rifle.
 
Yes. 7.62x63 vs 7.62x51.
Putting a spacer block in the magazine of a 7.62 conversion prevents .30-06 from being loaded in the magazine.
The Navy chamber inserts did not work out. A replacement barrel is the only way to go.
 
M1 in 7.62 X 51

I have an M1 in 308 and I like it. The only other M1 I have is in 30-06 but it is Italion made. A friend of mine shot it before I got it and said it's the better working of the M1's. He has had about 20 to 25 of them over the years and uses a Dane M1 when he goes to the US for WW2 events with the 101'st Easy Co. He is also a member of the M1 Collectors Ass.
The inserts doen't work in the chamber better to get a proper barrel.
 
"...the U.S. coast guard putting in inserts..." The U.S. Navy actually. The inserts had and have a nasty habit of coming out upon extraction. Nothing but the next case gets damaged though. The USN stopped using them because they don't work.
"...technically 762..." 7.62. The '06 is 7.62 x 63, metrically. Mind you, .308" doesn't convert to 7.62. It converts to 7.82. Don't try to figure out why they're called 7.62mm though. It'll damage your brain. The 7.5mm Swiss uses the same bullet.
 
7.62 converts to .3000". Depends on whether you are referring to bore or groove diameter for nomenclature.
Somewhere I have one of the sleeves, never did experiment with it. If a sleeve ejected with a fired case, the next round would have a LOT of excess headspace.
Rebarrelling an M-1 is an easy conversion as such things go, as long as a decent replacement barrel is used. Rebarrelling an M-1 starting with a blank would be a challenge.
 
rebarreled several M1s a few years ago with Douglas barrels that were chambered and threaded with the gas port and muzzel threads done and sold by Brownells. 30-06 308 and 1 243 were used. All the barrels indexed without trouble and all required no change to headspace. 7 actions were winchester and 1 I can't recall . the 308s and the 243 cycled without any trouble without using a mag filler.
