In cleaning the gas assembly portion of the garand, I've been told to get a gas wrench. Brownells has one that states " No-Mar Field Disassembly For Cleaning & Maintenance...Supports the gas cylinder and keeps it from rotating when removing the gas plug. Lets you easily separate these parts at home or in the field, without damage."

Is this a must have?

Agreed, a big screwdriver pushed in hard while turning and while supporting the gas cylinder with your other hand will do it.

The garand was build in a way that you did not need any tools to fieldstrip except the small multi-tool issued with it.

Buy the wrench.

The wrench will prevent the gas cylinder from rotating about the axis of the barrel. (If it does rotate, the splines are ruined and the gas cylinder will no longer fit tightly. Every reciprocation of the operating rod will provoke rotating force on the gas cylinder. This will not be conducive to accuracy.)

If you don't buy the wrench, your #### won't fall off - but your accuracy will.
