Hello all.

One day i wish to own a M1 Garand. Iconic, great rifle all around and really wish to own one someday.

But i need some informations that maybe some of you will gladly help me with.

First: Where does one buy an M1 Garand and its accessories like clips, sling, maybe even the M1D scope and cheek pad?

How do you regulate this rifle with the 5 round limit? Is there modified clips designed to only 5 rounds?

In terms of general maintenance, reliability and spare parts availability, is it a gun easy to replace old parts or you have to dig around quite to find the part?

I know the .30-06 is quite powerful, but also somewhat expensive too as a cartridge. Ammo seem to be easy to find, tho. Wonder if there is surplus rounds of these too.

That's it for now. Thanks!

There are 5 round clips designed for compitition shooting or hunting.
Garand is exempt from capicity limits, meaning your are granted the Devine right to have an extra 3 rnds in your rifle!

As for extras keep an eye on the mil-surp buy and sells.
Vulcan Gun Refinishing is my go to source for all things Garand.

They can be had on the Equipment Exchange. They were specifically named and allowed to be 8 rounds.

Surplus ammo has dried up, so they aren't cheap to feed. You can sometimes find. 308 versions (generally Italian), which are a little easier on the wallet to feed.

Make sure the 30-06 ammo is Garand specific, not hunting ammo or you'll wreck your rifle.

In addition to what others have stated, you can also reload for the Garand.

Clips can be found in the EE.

Also depends on your intent on owning a Garand. Are you going to shoot it or just keep it and later sell it as an "investment"?

You can also pick up a James River made Garand, usually Wanstalls have them but at a higher premium.

if cost of feeding it is going to be a problem. buy one in .308 off of the EE and then grab a case of the Hirtenburger surplus 7.62x51 ammo from Tradex!!!

No cap limit? Glad to hear that! Thanks for the info!

The Garand ammo is because of a different pressure versus modern ammo, right? I heard its possible to get an aftermarket adjustable gas plug to fix this issue. I also heard that its frowned upon to get a M1 garand chambered to .308, not sure exactly why tho.

Main purpose will really by as a collection item and also for plinking. Maybe i will use it to hunt later, but don't think so, i'm not really into hunting.

You could buy an Italian made receiver, and build one cost more than buying one. You can buy parts slowly overtime, I have finished 4 number 5 is a barrel away from finished. There are suppliers in US that will ship North no barrels or bolts (unless exported extra $$), but they can be purchased on the EE along with other parts. Newly machined stocks can be purchased from Boyds in US. I built one in 308 it is cheaper for factory ammo, but when you start reloading same powder, and bullets same price, just need the brass. The only downside is indexing barrel, reaming if necessary, and head spacing where you need some tools which cost a few bucks and some skills, or a local gunsmith quoted me $150 to install the new barrel and ream, so I spent the money and bought the reamer and gauges, and some indexing tools, probably why I didn't stop at one. If you might go hunting you probably wouldn't be taking a genuine M1D, or firing it much at the range as they are highly valued. There are lots of reproduction scopes, cheek pads, slings etc if you are going for a clone. Complete rifles come up on EE often ranging from $1200- $5000 depending on what it is.

Just went to look at these. Sadly , all sold out

You are right on the adjustable gas plug, that is what I did and it works fine with current commercial ammo.
Be warned, ehen you find one it wont be cheap, but they are a pleasure to shoot!

Consider an M14 style rifle instead of the Garand. Basically a mag-fed Garand in 7.62x51 instead of 30-06.
Put on a wood stock and handguard and Bob's your uncle.

I just ordered one and 10 boxes of ppu garand ammo from Calgary shooting center. Also I ordered that adjustable gas plug from brownells for like $40 US or something for when I run out of the PPU a store near me has 30-06 for $19 a box instead of the $35 a box of PPU costs. (I also ordered 10 clips from brownells on the same order for like $2 each or something)

it was more than you'd pay on the EE but it has a bit of a warranty, some new parts I guess? new stocks and barrels and I didn't really care much for collectors item I wanted something to shoot that I could buy with a credit card and pay over two months instead of EMT on EE. It arrived today but I don't get home for 10 more days unfortunately!
