M1 Garand - Legal Status ?

what would be a special exception?> And how can someone get one?

The rifle is non-restricted, anyone with a PAL can purchase one.
The exemption is the number of round it's legally alowed to hold, 8. All centerfire semi-auto rifles are to have a magazine capaicty no greater than 5 rounds. With the Garand, it only works with 8 round enbloc clips, hence it was given a specific exemption from the 5 round regulation.

I was told by the guy at aheia when taking my pal that you could have a Garand when the new rules came in (grandfathered) but couldnt buy a new garand due to the over 6 rule.

Was he full of it and I could buy a Garand? I recieved my pal about three months ago.

"...the guy..." He's wrong. Garands are specifically mentioned as being exempt from the magazine rule. As are Lee-Enfields.

So I can go out and buy an Enfield with a 10 round mag?

Anybody know who sells a half decent quality Garand?

yep yep

I own both, lee enfield and garand. Always take " what a guy told me" with a grain of salt. In other words, with the internet check CFC site for most of thoses what if questions. Or other sites such as gunnutz as you have did. ciao

There are quite a few exceptions
For example Lewis Gun 47 and 94 round mags don't have to be pinned.

Pity the guns are prohib

Lee Enfields are bolt guns... and are not affected by the 5 round limit

Correct. They also have a specific exemption. You'd have to ask the Liberals why you need an exemption for something already exempt. :)

Actually, it has something to do with a rare semi-auto conversion for the Lee Enfield. They wanted to make sure they weren't going to cause problems for the Canadian Rangers, as far as I understand it.

The last military Garands were made in the 50's, only used ones around in the $350-$600 range. Springfield Armory makes a new produciton commercial Garand but they have a reputation for poor QC and cost $1800 canadian....
