Gentlemen,
This file lets us know that the Chief of Staff, Gen. Douglas MacArthur Ordered that the M1 Garand Rifle was to be in Caliber of 30.06. This finally settled the question on Caliber. If you read these files you will see one
VERY IMPORTANT THING. Let's see if you guys can spot what that problem was.
I would like to see your replies from you guys about this file.

Some data has been posted before.

He listed a few good reasons on why adopting the M1 with the smaller 276 would have been a pretty dumb idea. But in reality this letter is well thought out and is logical and to the point. :)

Logistics of trying to supply front line troops with both 30-06 for the Springfield rifles, BAR's, Machine guns and pretty much every firearm that shoots a rifle round in the US Military at the time, verse producing and shipping 276 just for a single rifle.

Developing the 276 while continued development of the 30-06 would be a drain for the military as they have better things to develop instead of spending money to develop 2 different rounds for the same purpose.

The 30-06 round was considered mature and fully developed so why go with another round that will take years to develop to the level of the 30-06.

The Cost to tool up to produce the new round and stock pile it would be hard for the US at the time as it was the depression and they already had stock piles of the 30-06 so it would cut alot of costs.

And there was no reason they couldn't develop the M1 Garand to work with the 30-06 Springfield so arguing about a design of the rifle that hasn't been produced in large numbers yet so its not like it will cost a lot to "retool".

Clancy,

Got to remember they needed a rifle "now" so to speak, and no rifle is perfect, trying to make the rifle perfect is impossible, just look at all the modifications and the like they did to the rifle from the time the M1 was standardized to the development of the M14 and M15 (The M14 with the Go-Fast switch). In my personal opinion the M1 still isn't prefected even with the the M14 as it could still use some improvement (like the work they've done to make a better scope mounting for it).

All rifles will have problems/down falls that can be prefected, the No. 4 Lee-Enfield was years of development to produce a better weapon from the original Long Lee rifles as a example.

Plus you know I think he was trying to sound more "diplomatic" in the letter then he probably should have been, Ordanance was favoring the 276 round for their own reasons but you know, the 30-06 was already proven in battle, was according to the Board in its "perfected" stage and was already tooled up and stocked piled. So really if Ordanace though that the M1 chambered in 30-06 was not as good as the M1 chambered in the 276 round thats not necessarily the worst thing that can happen.

The faults of the weapon system that spent years to develop wouldn't change if they used the 30-06 or 276, and the majority of the faults were smaller things by this time anyways so the general modifications they did up untill the end of general service for the M1's is to be expected.

MacArthur wanted a rifle that worked more then a rifle still in testing, as if its still in testing what good does it do for you ??
