Hello all,

I have been wanting to buy an M1 Garand rifle. Could somone who has gone through this search before please give me some insights. Are they really rare to find? How much does the average one cost? Where could I find one? Any help would be great.

Thanks,

I bought M1 from P&S Militaria ,..a Harrington & Richardson mfg....overall i am happy with it...the bore is bright with no pitting...there was no rust or corrosion on the interior of the rifle..i stripped it right down....the stock has a few dings..but i think i can lift them with a steam iron...i am going to strip the stock and apply several coats of linseed oil..had to replace the rearhand guard..it had a bad gouge..parts are available.

I've got a P&S Garand .
It's got that " been there, done that " look to it and is absolutley gorgeous.
All I did to the rifle was clean it.
I've added a no gunsmith scope mount and a Shuster gas screw so I can blast away with pretty much any ammo out there.

I've bought 4 of the PS offerings,2 HRAs and 2 IHCs. Generally they are in inferior cosmetic condition with worn metal finish, beat up stocks, cracked handgds, minor surface rust and a fair accumulation of dirt and crud in the internals. On the plus side, the rifles appear not to have been fired that much as the bores are sound and un-pitted with satisfactory wear gauge readings at throats and muzzles. Also,op rod pistons and gas cylinders remain within spec-altho finish is well gone on gas cylinders and gas plugs. Also, there is a fair representation of original manufacturer's components, altho some things like trigger groups, stocks, and op rods are mostly mis-matched.I've had to replace all op rod springs(SOP on a well used Garand anyway),a broken safety, one stock which was cracked beyond repair,a cracked gas plug,2 sight covers, and a number of other small parts. Not sure of where they came from, but they appear to have been used/stored in a dry climate as there is virtually no pitting in spite of a general lack of lube and preservatives. From the sound barrel condition and scuzzy exterior finish I think they were probably carried and handled more than they were fired. If you are able to re-park the metal and re-finish/repair the stocks they work out just fine.

I also bought a PS Militaria Garand, Springfield Armory made. It's a good rifle. My only complaint is that taking it apart was like pulling teeth since I'm pretty sure it's never been fired. The springs need some breaking into with a few dozen rounds. I had a problem with premature clip ejection when I first started firing it but that is gone now. The stock could be better but it wasn't a primary concern of mine. I also nabbed a Shuster gas plug to reduce the wear and tear so it shoots like a dream.

Overall, I am very happy with my Garand, and for the price, you won't find very many cheaper Garands. It just takes some time and effort to get it apart and cleaned. If you get the right lighting, you can give internet people the illusion that what you have is gorgeous.

I also doubt anyone here who owns one hasn't watched Saving Private Ryan with their Garand on their lap at least once.

The P&S militaria Garands are a great buy, I have seen many rifles in far worse shape that were priced far higher than what P&S is asking. My advice to you would be to do what I did look at all the pics available on their sight and pick the one you think has the best metal on it and try not to get too hung up on how bad the stocks are. When I received my International Harvester I was expecting the stocks to be in absolutely terrible shape but they were in a lot better shape than they appeared to be in in the pictures. My advice would be to refinish the stocks an if need be replace any cracked handguards (My front handguard was cracked so badly when I removed it for cleaning it came off in two pieces! new handguards go for about $40 off Numrich).
