came across one locally tonight....is in fairly decent shape according to the info over the phone...what are some things to look for when buying one of these critters....the owner says it's all original and functions perfectly....what be a decent price to pay...if it's in atleat 65% condition, good working order with a good bore/barrel,and all original:confused:

I'll take a look at it and hopefully get some pics ....then figure it out from there..I know nothing about them or have a desire to own one...just thought it may not be a bad deal for someone else....stay tuned

Garand !

S.A. in "All original " in good or better shape ? Pay the Man & run like hell before he realizes what he did to himself !!!!

Take a close look at the barrel condition - lots of them around with dark or even rusty barrels.
There seem to be lots around with severe muzzle wear.
I've always read about checking this by inserting the bullet in a loaded shell into the muzzle. If the bullet goes into the barrel till the barrel touches the cartridge brass, this is a bad thing, severe wear.
A barrel and installation will set you back a bunch of money.

Pop the reciever out of the stock and look for signs of welding, brazing, and any mickey mouse repairs.

"...the hard part if finding the barrel..." In Canada.

The guy finally called me back, only to say that it was sold in the first hour of being listed in the paper, but his son has one he is thinking about selling...

The one I wanted to see was in very very good shape the guy told me...metal and wood were excellent with very few handling marks according to his description..

I did notice that Bashaw sports has some new M1 Garand barrels in 308 listed on his site, if anyone is interested...$219
