M1 Garand Troubleshooting

Is it a 7.62 conversion with shorter barrel? Is the side of the op rod marked '7.62MM' then the spring should be shorter by at least a 1/2 inch or so than 30-06 length.

After much googling
I found information the the M1 Garand spring

M1 Garand recoil Spring

Proper length is 19 3/4 to 20 1/4" when new.

between 16.75" and 17.75" with 5 lb weight

between 11.75" and 12.75" with 16 lb weight

1005-614-7568 SPRING, HELICAL, COMPRESSION: . S, 0.0562 max stk dia, 0.384 max free od, 20-1/4 free o/a lg, 200 total coils , operating rod (6147568).

--------------------- Wolff Spring--------------

I have counted the coils on a new Wolff spring

200 coils 0.056 dia 21-1/8 long outside dia. 0.378

# coils correct ...dia of wire correct..... outside dia 0.006 smaller

So wolff spring is .875 too long but everything else matches .... try spring and see if it works before cutting

Swap out the op spring with an in spec or functioning one sounds like it's an op spring issue not a clip latch one

Soft spring causes the bolt to hammer the back of the rec. Which clears the clip from the well

Or your using hot commercial ammo will cause the same issue

I have a new op rod spring inbound. I'm not sure it's the problem however as the rifle does it's ejection even when manually cycling dummy rounds. For that reason I also have a new clip latch and a few different en-bloc clips en route too. Hopefully I can solve this problem by tossing in these new parts

Well I received my bag of parts from Numrich a few days back. I replaced the clip latch and the guide rod (the guide rod didn't look any different, but since I had it all apart anyways). I didn't replace any of the springs, and as mentioned by another member the Wolff main spring is much too long since it is probably for a 30-06 action and mine is 7.62. The new en-blocs have LOTS of coating on them and they won't even fit in the action; I plan to get someone with a reloading tumbler to spin them around overnight next weekend.
Anyways, took it to the range today with my old clips and she functioned flawlessly. Now to buy more bulk ammo and enjoy this thing!

Thanks again for everyone's help and ideas

The springs are the same for 308/ 3006 .... unless you have the short barrel / short stock / short oprod

it is pressure at the gas port that works the action

if it beats up your shoulder ... the spring is to short/ weak
