M1 Garand

I'm in the market for an M1 to add to my collection. What should I know about the gun and what to look for when dealing with dealers at gun shows?

Welcome to CGN. We actually have a milsurp section where experts like to hang out and offer advice of this type freely.
I'll give you a couple of pointers for the Garand to get it started. Generally, you're going to need a bore light to inspect the rifling as the rifle is a semi auto. Look for strong rifling and a shiny bore. You should probably get the headspace checked by a gunsmith if possible, and generally just look for pitting on the receiver area-- bascially what you would look for in any rifle really.
I'm sure the experts will weigh in soon.

Watch your ammo. I would suggest not using over the counter hunting ammo.

Reload your own. Stick with bullets under 170 grains. I shoot 155s in mine. Certain powder can damage you Garand. Any brand of 4895, 4064 and 748 works great.

When cleaning your Garand if you get anywhere near the follower, make sure you are holding the bolt back tightly.
Here is my finger after not following my own advice. I lost my fingernail over this one.
