Thought you guys might appreciate some pictures of one of two Danish Garands I have in .308. This one has the nicer stock of the two (both marked "MT"- they are 1/2" shorter than the 30-.06 standard stocks). But the metal on both is in the same shape. Both are Beretta built for the Danish. Enjoy... Best I can do with an iphone.

I'd appreciate a pic of the markings on the receiver heel of these.

They were known as the Tipo 2 Garand in Italian service. Breda seems to have done a lot of the conversions on US made receivers and re-marked the heels to indicate this plus a stamped "7.62".

These make up into very nice rifles. I built 2 of them on Breda receivers using the Italian Tipo 2 surplus components- an op rod and stock bobbed by .5 inch plus a Springfield Armory .30-06 barrel shortened .5 inch at the chamber end, re-threaded, and reamed out to 7.62.

Here you go. Barrel is a SA 45 with a "FAT" with 16 or something number under stamped (put it back in safe, but can't remeber the number- might have been 16?)

Thanks for the pics. The 2 rifles that I built on Danish surplus Breda receivers are pretty much identical to yours.

AFAIK the Danes never adopted the Garand in 7.62. All of the ones that they disposed of in the late 1990s were the standard .30-06. The Italians appear to have been the sole users of their 7.62 Tipo 2 7.62 conversions. They built them on all makes of receivers-US Springfield, Harrington& Richardson, International Harvester, Winchester, Breda and Beretta. ALL of the actual Italian conversions have "7.62-2" stamped on the receiver heel flat immediately behind the rear sight.

The markings "FAT" and "MT" are standard Italian military arsenal markings. The shortened 7.62 Tipo 2 stocks were either conversions of US GI stocks or newly made ones. I have one of each. Incidentally, one can find the shortened "MT" marked 7.62 Tipo 2 stocks for sale which have been re-converted back to their original .30-06 length by gluing and pinning a wooden segment for the stock ferrule on the front end. These work well and are a lot easier to fit up than are the new Boyd stocks.;)

Thanks for the info. I have a spare one of those shortened stocks as a spare set. Sent from a guy in Italy. It's not as nice as this stock in the pictures mind you. Had it up for sale on the EE a while back, but it's a pretty limited market.

The NRA Man at Arms for the Gun Collector had a good article on all the Danish Garands incuding the Beretta and Breda builds. There's mention of some being converted experimentally for the Danes but none are known to have been delivered. Mine appear to be have been refurbed as the barrels also have a "Waff Schu" mark with the PB92XX and PB89XX closer to the muzzle in what appears to be a fine engraving versus a stamp. There was mention in a post some to time ago of this German company that was selling these.

The shortened Tipo 2 stocks can be found in new condition for $50-60. I had heard that there were some 7.62 rifles imported from Germany that had been built up with Tipo 2 parts. The barrels are the toughest thing to find now that the US import gate has closed.:(
