I'm details stripping an M1 I bought this week for a really great price (I couldn't say no). A Dane return 2.98Mil SA (July 1944).

Turns out it has original lockbar sights and an uncut op rod!

It also has a brandy-new 1966 VAR bbl and a beech buttstock. some of the small parts are Beretta. Too bad, really. As if it had a 44 dated SA barrel, this one would be worth restoring. Most of the parts are period correct SA.

The Winchester and Springfield Garands (from Denmark) with VAR Barrels are great that came in from Districorp about 1994. The rifles look and shoot just like a new one. The M1D's from Denmark still have their original 1950's dated barrel (not VAR).
 
oh, I'm not lamenting the quality of the VAR barrels. I've had several of them now and I agree they shoot great. I'm just saying that if it had an SA 1944 barrel, I would try to restore it to WW2 "as issued" condition. Since I'm not going to rebarrel this one to accomplish that, I'll leave it as-is.

Actually, I could probably trade someone the uncut op rod for a cut one and all the replacement parts I would need to get rid of the Beretta bits and possibly even get a new buttstock out of the deal - LOL.

I agree with Hitzy that the beech isn't that pretty, but it does work OK.

This is actually probably my 8th Garand or so, but it's the only one I have currently. I remember buying several back when Districorp had Danes. My cheapest one was a 1942 SA Dane I got at Lebaron for $124.99 back in the early 1990's. Wish I had kept it, as it was my first M1. It was discounted because hte buttstock was kinda beat up, but it had its original barrel in nice shape and was almost all correct except for the handguards.

Ahh, the good old days!

I'll be happy to indulge when it's reassembled. Right now it's completely stripped to the smallest screw.

These Danes had alot of cosmo in the nooks and crannies. This is probalby my 5th Dane, and invariably when I get one from somebody else (not a dealer) they didn't do a proper job of detailing it before taking it out shooting. This one is no exception ;)
 
Beech is the worst wood to stock any rifle in. Heavy, ugly, strong to a point, but ugly.

You have to love the Danish garands, such a mish-mash of manufacture parts.

I would argue any US M1 is as "mis-mashed". I've had CMP/DCM M1's that had a compolete mix from all 4 American producers, plus a subcontractor barrel (in this case a Marlin).

The M1 was made with parts interchangeability in mind.

K43's, G43's and K98's have Laminated Beech. Sorry to burst your bubble!
