M10X 2023 Version

BLUF: the rifle works with crappy ammo and runs smooth

Backstory:
I got the opportunity to try out one of the M10X rifles with nitrided barrels (18.6" for Canada and chrome lined hammer forged 16" for US) and upgraded trigger springs in the US. They are about to hit the Canadian market soon (as far as M+M told me).

I spent roughly 600rds through that rifle and was positively impressed by it. It did accept all weird and wonderful ammo that is on the market and run reliably. The rifle got tested with various mags and had no issues with any of them (PMAG, steel, Bakelite).

With the gas valve, I was able to control the gas flow, and ensured that on setting 2 (for dirtier/ inconsistent ammo) it would be reliable. The rifle did have a more violent ejection pattern on setting 2 but it did perform flawlessly with all types of ammo. The 4-prong muzzle brake was extremely helpful in reducing muzzle climb. The new barrel did improve accuracy and it was between 1.5-2 MOA on 100m. Yes, the range was limited where I was at…

Taking it apart, it was easy to clean the gas valve and gas spring/ piston and tube. Parts were stainless steel and nitrided. That apparently does improve resistance to corrosion and whatnot. The upgraded trigger spring does lead to better reliability. MLOK handguard looks sick as well.

My take:
I believe this rifle is a great weapon platform and has reached a stage at which it will be a great competitor to many other semi-automatic rifles. It runs great on various ammo, mags and can be adjusted if it does not. For me this rifle is a big plus for the Canadian market in a non-restricted version.

Interesting.

I have always wanted one of these, always worried me of the horror stories though, if they indeed have finally worked out the bugs, I'd pick one up for sure. Where did you get yours from?

Same, I am digging the look of it in those pics anyways. Is that the 16" barrel?

A buddy in the US got one of their 2023 versions for testing. I was able to use it for a couple of days and form my opinion on it. Apart from being overgassed it's a fantastic rifle.

Have they tightened up the fit between the monolithic outer upper receiver and the internal upper receiver, where they slide together? Are the barrels installed straight now? Those were the two issues I had with mine. Potentially a great platform, but as of last year it still needed some refinement...

Yes, they did. The model I played with had zero play between the inner and outer upper receiver. The barrel was straight on it as well. I got good MOA out of it, will keep testing it whenever I get a chance to.

In terms of reliability, they improved tremendously as well. Ran some nasty ammo and it did fantastic.

I do agree it to hold tremendous potential as a non-restricted rifle, and from what I've seen and the rifle I played with it seems that they achieved that goal.

It sure took them a while to figure it out.... their original launch in Canada was such a face plant and then years and several generations of close to zero improvement in accuracy and dependability was just icing on the cake.

I would not say zero or close to zero improvements. From what I read (and understand) a lot is due to the fact that the Canadian market has a wide variety of cheap, inconsistent Chinese ammo. Which they apparently did not have to test their rifles with. And the first batches also had problems with their gas ports/ sizes of it.

I really hope they were able to improve that. At least the rifle I played with seemed fine and accurate.

I was more thinking about charging handles flying off..... and SKS sized groups.... :)

and then as I said the rollout with the mix up about who was going to bring it in and at what price soured people.

If the charging handle is fully twisted into place it will not come lose. If the charging handle is coming not properly clicked in then it will come lose.

Things have changed and I believe this upgraded rifle would be great for Canada in both the restricted and non-restricted category.
