I guess the question is directed at me so let me answer IMHO. With most of the lower to mid range priced scopes the mil-dot system is only used at one power setting for example my Bushnell 4200 elite 6.5-24 X40 is calibrated at 12X, what I mean here is if I zoom in or out from 12 power the size of the mil-dot rectical changes, (gets bigger- or smaller depending on magnification) and throws the math way out for ranging and quick comeup calculations and sizing of targets. Until some of the Higher end scopes such as the leupold Mark 4 LRT 6.5-20 X50 that my .300 wears and others the rectical is on the first focal plane,(can be explained in depth better than I can on the Leupold site) In laymans terms and the only way I can explain it is the rectical stays the same size through all power bands on the scope and so does the math. So using the scope I can figure out what range I am shooting at and go to my bullet drop charts for comeup corrections or view bullet impacts and see what I need for comeups. and until advances in the scopes and recticals on first focal plane I never used High magnification for shooting at long range. The only time I use the 24X on my Bushnell Elite is for Spotting target hits at long range, or shooting at the 100-200yrd mark. Now the M-14 is basicaly a battle rifle and if tuned properly will hit 1000yrds, but probably more practical to the 800yrd mark and closer. In my experiance in a rifle that will be used in the field and for range work the 10X magnification is optimum, when trying to stay in the lower to mid priced scopes.
But this is just my opinion and I am open to suggestions and other experiance because the M-14 type rifle is new to me and you all may be able to improve my knowledge about the use of scopes....I may not be using my Bushnell to its fullest potential, and I am a lousey teacher and may have missed something in my above description....so feel free to add.
