I've noted a variety of hand guard/ heat shields on m14 rifles, the early wood ones, slotted fiberglass (prone to issues due to heat mirage) solid fiberglass, and recently picked up an m305 it's in a drab colour stock with black aluminum heat shield.. Is the aluminum shield typical of the m305? Thought of ask here as I couldn't get the specs when I googled it.

Not typical at all. I've never had one in my hands.
The rifle originally was designed and entered service with the slotted handguard.
I'd take a cruise thru Lee Emerson's M14 history database, origins of many M14 items as well as more info/history on the platform than one can soak in
