Hey CGN, as my post count indicates, im new here. Im also totally new to the gun world... Never even shot a firearm in my life to be honest lol. I always been a fan of shooting though, i loved target shooting with pellet guns in the army cadets and played paintball for a while when i was younger (i know its not even close to shooting real weapons.)

I Decided its time to go ahead and head for the real thing. Im looking into getting my license and buying my first firearm. After a bit of research i noticed the M14 was getting a lot of love. They seem to be relatively cheap too.

I was wondering how good it would be as a first firearm. And if so, what would be the best place to shop around for prices and deals (preferably online)? I know im burning some steps since i dont even have my firearm license yet but i like to plan ahead.

It's a great gun but at about $1 per round it's really too expensive to learn on.

I'd suggest a Ruger 10/22 or an SKS. Both inexpensive rifles and more importantly to shoot as you build experience.

I would go with the SKS (7.62x39 caliber) or 10/22 (.22lr caliber) like mentioned above. Not only are they cheaper to run, but will also be better to build shooting skill. Another thing is if you start with a larger caliber, you could develop a flinch that will stay with you until you forcibly break the habit. This happened to me as I started with a .303, but I am starting to break the habit, but every once and a while I do flinch.

Damn didint take the price of the ammo in consideration lol. I bet its a common noob mistake. Im a fast learner though, i'll get it. :D

The SKS seems like an interesting alternative, i'll look into it.

SKS isn't a bad start. As mentioned, a 22lr is pretty good choice. There are plenty of cheap and plentiful 22lr guns, even someone's grandpa's Cooey for under $100 sometimes on EE.

While you are having fun with a basic 22lr, you can also work on getting a good ol centerfire boltgun. Bolt guns will be simpler and easier to accurise.

M14s are great and high value especially if you don't mod it or tinker. Otherwise it becomes a fantastic money/time spender....which you'd have fun tinkering, and not necessarily shooting.

i am getting my m14 as my first rifle, because its a rifle to have. My favorite rifle. SKS, and .22LR, I can buy it anytime. M14 with a JAE-100 or Sage, or M14doctor stock, trigger job, and scope will cost me up to $3000. I am doing it, build it as you go. I cant afford to drop 3k up front. Plus I am sure the 2010 Marstar m14 wont last long as they got 420+ pre-orders, and considering it a totally new production, I expect it to be the best Norinco run so far.

I agree with the fact that sks's and 10/22 will always be around. I got the 399 marstar m-14 for a first gun. Yes I did learn that I needed something more "practical" to shoot in the long run but I am glad I bought it now rather than 5 years down the line.Think of guns as an investment. That how I am allowed to buy a couple of guns a month. They never go down in value (mostly) and its like converting money to gold. Only my guns will be worth more than gold if anything ever goes down. Think of the 99 dollar hand gun craze. I wish I would have bought more then 1. Also the recent .22 craze at marstar. So think of every gun as an investment and ask your self is it long term or short. But dont worry I have a sneakin suspicion you will be buying more then one gun.........we always do

You really should start with a .22LR

Buy a M-14 and a .22LR rifle (such as the Ruger 10/22).

If you are only going to buy one, however, make it a .22LR.

you didn't define as to what you're doing with it, just that you wanted an m14- if it's gophers and plinking, and some target shooting, a 22 is a far better choice- if you want to go hunting at least deer-sized game or reach out to longer distances, then it's the m14- unfortunately, the sks does niether job well- it's just inexpensive

The problem is i dont have the money for 2 rifles (for the moment)

I'd rather start with 1 and the SKS is really starting to appeal to me... And at 139$ on Marstar i cant really go wrong.

what do you mean out of stock, i never saw them come into stock, whats going on. I have been waiting months for this party, dont tell me i missed it?

everyone says 10/22 but if you arent going to add everything you can to it, then a mossberg 702 is a good choice.. more accurate ( in my experience ) and if anything, more reliable ( also in my experience )

as far as M14 ... it was the first rifle that i owned .. but i had done alot of shooting previously

Another vote for the 10/22 here, but with Tech Sights.
If you're learning to shoot then forget the scope.
Learn to shoot with a good pair of irons first, get off the bench, get your butt in the dirt, practice prone, kneeling, standing, snap shooting, develop your shooting skills. Buy a few hundred rounds of .22 and have at it.
Then when you do get an M14 you will be ready to learn how to make hits with its superb irons out to 500m.
Tech sights are also available for the SKS.

If you can't afford the $200. - $350. cost of a Ruger 10/22 (in addition to another centerfire rifle) then it's time for you to face the fact that you can't afford to shoot a centerfire rifle.

If you can't afford to shoot you can't learn to shoot.

If you are as broke as you suggest, forget any centrefire and - once you have completed your CFSC, reached the age of majority, and obtained your PAL - buy any .22LR rifle first.

At least, with a .22LR, you'll be able to afford to shoot.

K?
